new here too..nice to hear that another heavy smoker my age range has also made the switch. i started vaping 9/22/10 since then i have met temptation and conquered it. I've went out multiple weekends to bars and clubs wanting to smoke with the buddies but end up vaping. they actually seemed interested in vaping and gave it a "tut" so far i got 1 friend to get an e-cig. I went to Las Vegas last weekend and i never wanted a cig so bad since i started. I even burnt out one of my atty's drawing it out so hard..hahhahahahaha. anyway. i think im done with e-cig styles im lookin into getting a PV now. more bang for the buck and it vapes like dragon!

At least no one will steal your smokes!!;)

HA!! The unanticipated, and much welcomed, benefit of switching to vaping turned out to be that my grandkids are no longer hitting up soft-touch nan when they run out of smokes. But the down side is now I feel extra bummed that they are still trashing their young lungs with cigs, and I'm gonna end up buying them their own starter kits to convert them. Then they'll be hitting me up for my juice! LOL Oh well... what's a granny to do?

I like new guys, being one, I'm biased, you get to learn from other's posts.

I thought a PV was an a-cig...

What's the difference?

They're the same thing. But the PV term has taken off more with the more "seasoned" vapers who have gotten into mods. But you can just as easily apply "PV" to a standard 510. It is, after all, a Personal Vaporizer. :)

No kidding, the more new vapers there are, the less chance they have of banning ecigs... after all, we're all rational, adult, REGISTERED VOTERS, right?

Welcome aboard! Mistress's vids are really good, +1 on those. This little "hobby" can be as little or as much as you want... a way to 'cut down', a way to completely replace your analogs, or (like a lot of us) an all-consuming obsession that ends up changing how we shop. I was in the hardware aisle looking at LED penlights, and caught myself thinking "you know, I could turn that into a mod..."

It's all good. Don't let the avalanche of info bewilder you too much. In addition to the videos, DonDaBoomVape did a pdf series in 6 parts, "Welcome to the Wonderful World of Vaping" that is a must-read. Here is part one...

Again, welcome NOOB... lol... y'know, in a few months, you'll be typing replies to others that are just like this, right?

Well, I'm a pretty new guy here... I started vaping about 6 weeks ago, and I've been analog free for the last three weeks... I started with an 801 Pen Style. I also ordered a BLU for fun, that's gone now, I gave it to a friend of mine that is using it. I grabbed a couple NJOY 4081s at a gas station, used them on and off for a week, and those have been given away... two more ex smokers are now enjoying them. My office has three fewer smokers now... 3 down... 2 to go.

I have invested a lot of money into vaping, but I have also crusaded a lot and helped a number of other folks get into it as well. I can't honestly say I have saved any money yet, even though analogs in New York state are better than 10 bucks a pack most places. in the first five weeks of this endeavor, I've spent more on hardware, juice and accessories than analogs would have cost me, but this past week I spent absolutely nothing while consuming a small fraction of the juice I have here.

I've built a few box mods including a 5V dual 10440, and a Mad Vapes Blue Lightning, plus I own about 10 510s and a couple egos and a wicked stick... I've turned into a hardware junkie! I give a lot of it away to people that are just starting out. I'm basically using 510 cartomizers with a wide assortment of batteries, and I VASTLY prefer vaping to smoking. It's safe to say I'll never smoke an analog again. This forum has really helped with that!

Mistress Nomad... your videos are really great, and I've watched them all. Anybody just starting out would do well to give 'em a watch.

So now I'm going to make my actual point... From one relatively immersed noob to another...

People starting out seem to be pretty interested in "Cig-Style" e-cigs... Automatic batteries featuring small form factors that emulate the look and feel of a cigarette. This is fine as a crossover strategy, but soon the realization sets in that every last part of your starter kit is essentially disposable, with the possible exception of the charger. With Atomizers lasting a month or less, and batteries lasting 200 charges or so, whatever kit you so happen to start out with will eventually be replaced by other stuff, and as you replace the original stuff through attrition or product failure, your performance goals may change. The good news is that there are adapters and assorted bits of gizmology out there that will make transition to other form factors easy.

So my advice to a newbie, from a nearly newbie is as follows: Don't sweat the small stuff. ANY e-cig/PV is better than analogs... If you bought "the wrong thing", explore the suppliers sites and find adapters that will let you use up the stuff you bought while transitioning to better performing hardware. I still vape 4081 cartomizers and attys on my new batteries using an adapter, and when those bits wear out, They will be replaced with 510 stuff. If you have a BLU, you can use 306 cartomizers which will significantly improve the performance of the BLU, and when the Blu Batteries die, replace them with 510s or an ego... the 306 stuff will work fine.... when that wears out you can replace with 510 stuff...

So the bottom line for me is that you shouldn't stress out about which starter kit you get... sure, follow the GREAT advice that Ms Nomad has outlined and pick your poison from either the 510 system or the Kr808 system... but don't stress out over which one... you're in this for the long haul, it's not a sprint to the finish... you can easily and economically cross platforms until you discover what will work best for you.

And for the noob on a budget... Don't overlook box mods from the start. For under 50 bucks you can have a really high performing system that in no way resembles a cigarette, but absolutely delivers the goods when it comes to performance. If you are handy and can solder, you can have a great system with amazing performance for under 30 bucks!

I've already been raving about it to every smoker I know, and I'm already infuriated and confounded by the idea of e-cigs as a supposed health risk. There isn't a single non-sinister reason I can think of for analog death accelerators to remain acceptable for sale while e-cigs are being handled like poisonous snakes.

The vids were great btw.

Thank you muchly. :) Good advice not to sweat it. Just about anything people recommend here is a good product, and most of them will work for most vapers. Some people do have to experiment more, but mostly, any quality e-cig will get you on your way. The DSE 801 is a good model - so kudos to your friend, Security Ape!

You do make a good point about size. Many move on from the small form-factor e-cigs. But some of us don't... like me. :) I have one eGo batt. Otherwise, still all small-ish e-cigs. No desire to "move up" in the world.

I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I haven't had battery/atty failures. Necessity is the mother of invention. I don't have the money to replace stuff, so I take REALLY good care of the stuff I have. Thus, it lasts for a lot longer. So, since I haven't had any problems with reliability, I am quite happy to stay with my cig-like PV's. Even the eGo looks a bit like a cigar.

You do bring up a great point about box mods. They can be had for cheap - very cheap. The only caveat I would add to that, is that the person should THOROUGHLY study up on how to properly use the external batteries. All you have to do to see why is look at the GLV forum -recently, someone who didn't study up on their batteries had their GLV go BOOM when they stacked unprotected CR123's. Fortunately, they weren't injured.

Some newbies do start with mods, and if you're going to do that, ECF is the place to be. Just make sure you do your homework. Mods are safe when used properly... not so much if they aren't.

welcome aboard! (pun intended) lol

but seriously. the people here are extremely knowledgable and full of great advice. Its rare to see a forum that welcomes us new comers as much as these guys/gals. Hehe, i must come from the slums of the internet, i feel like i need to tread carefully around here. Things i dont think would be an issue, well, lets just say that i violated the rules here twice in my first 6 posts HAHHAHA.

Seriously though, this is a great place. I even have it on my favorites list on my work pc.

Happy vaping!

(p.s. try banana flavored e-fluid as fast as you can)!

My unit appears to be leaking from somewhere... and I can tell already that this is not the unit for me. Also, from pouring over FAQs around here, I'm considering the fact that nicotine might not be the only addiction cigarettes were serving. I had no analogs with me this morning, vaped first thing when I woke up, and while it took care of the fuzzy-headedness I would've had without nicotine (I can't get a damn thing done before a morning puff), I didn't get the headrush I've come to enjoy about that first smoke of the day. Kind of twisted, isn't it? Craving an otherwise unpleasant experience? So I bought a normal pack, had one, and vaping has been keeping me going since then without any discomfort. I would have smoked close to a deck by this time today ordinarily.

This is interesting. I'm learning how to smoke and how not to smoke all at the same time.

I have heard of people having leaking problems with the 801. I didn't have those problems myself, though to be fair I didn't have it very long (not because it was bad, but because I traded it for a kit for my dad).

The 801 is a good model... but it's also a very light hit. The lightest of any standard e-cig I've tried. You may need something that packs more of a punch.

For a punch-y experience, the Kr808, my first kit, is still the top dog in my eyes, when it comes to standard models. It runs at a slightly higher voltage than most other standard e-cigs, and cartomizers themselves also seem to deliver more throat hit. Getting a rougher hit may be enough to get you through the morning. A slightly higher nic juice may also help.

If you want a way to address the other addictive aspects of smoking besides nicotine directly, you may try snus or snuff. Smokeless tobacco products like those are less harmful, since they don't produce all the nasty chemicals that result from combustion, and they generally have fewer added chemicals than cigarettes.

Although I think snuff delivers more of a headrush, since it is, after all, going right into your nose. It's a weird way to do it, but it does work. And on the rare occasion when I crave a ciggie, a bit of snuff does the trick. You may consider having that as an emergency fix.

If the leaks are seeping out from the atomizer/battery screw connection, likely they're getting into your batteries. If so, goodbye batteries. Count that as serendipity, because that's a convenient excuse to dump some hardware you're beginning to sour on.

Kind of twisted, isn't it? Craving an otherwise unpleasant experience?

Welcome to the world as we know it. For better than a month after I started vaping, even as my left hand fondled whatever PV I had, my right was reaching for my shirt pocket where the Marlboros were erstwhile stashed.

For awhile, you're going to be an innocent bystander to a mind/beast clash going on inside your own body. I found, personally, that if I slipped the beast an occasional cigarette, he didn't make too much trouble--and he faded.
