Lettuce be honest. Lacking a sense of smell from smoking is about the only plus to the habit. Sadly, my sense of smell as returned. And while there are pleasant smells on this planet. OMFG are some things rank. The public restroom at work? WOW! Dude the works two offices down from me? Use deodorant. Woman that works up two floors for me but is somehow in the elevator every time I am? I get it, you really really like your perfume. I don't!

These things weren't issues 4 months ago for me, but since my sense of smell as returned after 20 years I'm thinking of getting nose plugs.

You better be careful with statements like that, man. Big Tobacco might try to use your argument to promote analogs. I can see it now: "Marlboro, making the world stink less since 1924".

The perfume/cologne thing gets me every time. I know people THINK they smell good but do they seriously need to bathe in it?!?

Got to agree with the perfume/cologne thing. I've actually went into a COPD exacerbation attack when certain people get around me. Do they have to pour it on that thick.

Okay you really made me laugh!!!!!

Always look at the bright side though...there are things that you never really appreciated since you couldn't enjoy the aroma to the fullest. :)

Yeah, it's pretty amazing...all those smells out there. Most definitely, many of them are quite fowl and/or just plain overwhelming...but some are so good. I love being able to really smell my food cooking again. Just gave my lawn a fall clip...I really missed the smell of cut grass. And then....what's that smell....Ahhh crap, I haven't cleaned up the doggy doody in the back 40 for about a year! Guess what I'm doing this weekend?

One of the first things I noticed when I'd quit smoking and my sense of smell started coming back was the smell of my dogs. It's not like they are needing baths. But they DO have a...shall we say?...DOGGIE smell! And I always knew when hubby had a cigarette. Even if it was earlier and he'd left the room a little while before. He continued smoking nearly 9 months after I quit. I really had to bite my tongue at times. Didn't want to be one of those "anti-smoking-nazis" I hated so much when I did smoke!

I'm also painfully aware when my bathroom is due for a good cleaning. Sigh.

+ Above! People, brush your teeth, bathe, and use deodorant. Now that I can smell you? You smell bad. My apologies to anybody I offended when I couldn't smell.

I've heard that over time you'll learn to ignore the new scents. It's like a partially deaf person having surgery to restore their hearing (which happened to a friend of mine). For months she responded to every sound until, like the rest of us, she learned to ignore them.

Last night, I was making soap. Cinnamon, Ocean Breeze, Peppermint, Sandalwood, and Evergreen in various mixes.

I apparently got a drop or two of peppermint scent somewhere I can't find it--because as of today the kitchen STINKS of peppermint. Normally I considered the scent pleasant. Now it's nauseatingly strong.

I wish my brain would learn to ignore the nasty smells. It seems there are way more of the nasty ones out there. Too bad cigarette smoke still smells good. My cravings for a cig would drop a lot if they smelled bad.

Not necessarily. Since my sniffer has returned to normal, cigs stink to high heaven, but still make me crave one like crazy.

You're right, Morpheus. The smells aren't nearly as bad as they used to be. But once I was doing 45 driving with the windows down and got (what seemed like) a car full of smoke from somewhere ahead of me.
