Hey Ian,
I've never had dreams about smoking, but I have had many diet restrictions placed on me (some voluntary and some not so much) in the past 8 years. At one point or another, I've been off of any kind of sugar, wheat/gluten products, dairy products, eggs, meat products, soy, nuts, and corn-- and many of those restrictions came 3+ at a time! I do know that every time I abstain from something even though I like it, I have dreams about stuffing my face with it. I'll dream for weeks and weeks about walking through a supermarket stuffing cookies and bacon and ice cream into my mouth, and it feels so good in the dream but then I wake up and feel guilty.
I think the important thing to remember is that you DIDN'T sneak into the basement and chain smoke.
Your mind is trying to comfort itself by dreaming about cigs, but you're not actually doing it! Just like I'm not actually eating multiple KFC double downs in my sleep, you're not actually inhaling carcinogens by the mouthful in your sleep.
Don't give the dreams any power over you and I find they usually go away on their own when they realize you won't give in.
