I'd like to make my own vape stand but have zero experience with woodworking. There are some great threads on here about making your own stand, but one thing I can't figure out or find is how you know when to stop at the right depth when drilling holes? When you use a spade bit is it easy to eyeball the depth when you drill and be consistent across holes? Thanks for any guidance :)

I am not sure what exactly you are asking but if I understand you like I think I do then you can try this....

Line your drill bit up outside of whatever you want to drill, then take a piece of tape and wrap it around the drill bit at the depth you should stop. Then drill your hole. When the tape on the drill bit reaches the surface of what you are drilling, then you know you are right where you want to be.

I use forstner bits for a flat bottom but you need a drill press for these (and they are eeexxxxpppensive - a set of 5 good ones will set you back a good zmax3 - how sick am I to compare other items to the cost of vaping mods???)

simplest depth guide is tape on the drill bit (or a sharpy line but those are hard to get off if you are wrong)

figure out the depth you want, put the drill bit in the hole (take drill bit out of drill 1st) then put the bottom edge of the tape so it is even with top of the wood, put bit back in drill and then drill down until the tape hits the wood. voila, cheap drill depth gauge

We train them with the new Louis Vuitton iPad Air Case as they really fall in love with these products and they work quite well.

Okay Calyx, the question you asked has been answered, unless you have a drill press with depth stop, which is the real hot tip.

You didn't ask about bits. Your spade bit is fine. A brad point or Forstner bit would be even better. Try to find a way to clamp your work piece instead of holding it by hand. I cannot agree that a spade bit should have a predrilled hole. It's going to be really hard to center on an existing hole, especially if you have to use a pistol grip drill.
