Clever children more likely to become drunks - Asylum UK | For All Mankind ,Men's Lifestyle

Now thats why i drink so much :D

But seriously i think the article has hit the nail on the head as the bigger the brain, the bigger the need for entertainment, which i am afraid in alot of society means drink :(

I like a drink and it has caused me and my family more troubles than its worth so i believe it is and always will be a CLASS A+1 drug even though its strangely legal ;)

I've noticed that also. My mum was the first example of that. She's quite clever(in IQ tests she often scores somewhere 140), and she drinks avery afternoon. It's not drinking till she's unconscious, but a glass or two of vodka mixed with coke. I'm also getting high scores in those test(between 135-145) and I hooked on pot. I smoked almost every day for 3yr, I've quit 2 months ago. Also as a digression, quiting pot was a no problem. I just stopped one day, on the next day I was thinking of it, but later I just forgot it, as if it didn't exist. Only today I recalled it, since my friend asked me if I want to go for a pot poker night :) No problem refusing :)

Also many smart people that I now(some college professors etc) especialy in the fields related to mathematics(physics, computer-science etc) there is a high percent of people that drink. I presonally didn't drink a lot because I smoked, but in that matter I consider it equal. Weed is less addictive and not as harmful as alcohol, but i think the motivation for doing both is similliar. You just like to put your mind in a different state. My another theory about that, was that smart people better understand the global situation, and how that's saddens them, so they grab a drink. Neverthless it's nice to see some scientific evidence of this correlaction.

I think I can agree with this as well. My personal IQ score is somewhere between 135-137 (got tested officially twice for school) and I find that my brain operates the most efficiently when it's slowed down a bit. Nicotine, alcohol, and other substances keep me from over-complicating things and make it easier to... think. I find myself speeding while driving to keep myself from getting bored, and coming to 20 step solutions when the equation only requires 2 steps. It's painfully boring when looking out the window while driving and seeing the same scenery flash into my conscience 50 times before it passes, so if I go faster, it increases the rate at which my brain must process information and keeps me more alert. Or... I can slow down my brain...

When it comes to matters of the world around me, I try to seclude myself in my own part of reality in order to keep myself from going insane. There's not much to complain about when you're grateful that the situation isn't worse than it currently is. I wish I could watch the news without becoming dreadfully depressed... We need more good news.

Its a bit like driving for 100mls on a single road ...Takes you 3 hrs .... Or driving 150mls on a m/way ...takes you 2 and a half hrs !!! .... Because you been stuck behinde the van for so long .... He is now Pis**ng you off ..... you might get passed him ... But their will always be another one to slow you down ... so what's the point?

edisme: there's something in what you wrote. I had my best coding sessions after a medium joint(not too fat - that one made me lazy and I watched tv series). Nice medium joint, and 12hr of non-stop coding easily(sometimes even more than 20). It was also much easier to get into something like trance, where I focused all my attention on the problem instead of being distracted by all the things around me. But sometimes sober mind was necessary to comperhend the whole application, not just the part I was working on.

i know one thing.. i love my fellow drunks when i am one of them but when i am sober i avoid the buggers like the plague and find the state of drunkenness quite repulsive.. however that dosnt stop me becoming one of them every so often..

i have also seem plenty of stupid drunks in my time..

i used to earn my living driving a taxi cab.. so i consider myself an expert on drunks.. he he.. they used to be my main source of income many years ago..
