Okay, it's OT, but not entirely-

Drugs for Schizophrenia May Exacerbate Loss of Brain Tissue, Study Finds - Bloomberg

The current anti movement works hard at keeping patients off smoking/tobacco/nicotine because it's bad for you, heck smoking may kill you when you've done it long enough. The other stuff, well you know, we don't want you to do it because you're sure to go back to smoking if you do and, think about the children.

Anyway, here's a study, a legitimate medical study, that shows that the drug treatments given for schizophrenia may exacerbate brain tissue loss. Translated, BP's drugs are more than likely causing harm based on scientific results. What is the conclusion of this study?

“It’s not a wise thing to jump to the conclusion that this is bad, although intuitively it seems like the first thing that people will conclude. In reality, we still don’t quite understand what it means.” emphasis mine

"“Pharmaceutical companies must continue the vigorous search for agents that are genuinely neuroprotective,” the researchers said."

Now look at how E Cigs are looked at, jumping to conclusions on dis-information offered by the FDA and bans proposed on the basis of "We still don't quite understand".

Just don't let a Schizophrenic smoke, it's bad for him and bad for the movement.

Having known quite a few people diagnosed as schizophrenic this is not new news. This is one of the many reasons they must change their medication, and sometimes have them completely off of them if they have been on them for too many years. It is so very sad no matter which way you look at it.

There have been studies, can't remember when or by whom, but last one I read was last year, that smoking actually calms those with schizophrenia, which is probably why a good majority smoke.

Nicotine is beneficial to schizophrenics in two ways.

Nicotine relieves anxiety, and the disease often is accompanied by anxiety. (You'be be anxious too, if you were plagued by paranoia.)

Nicotine helps to relieve some of the side effects of the medications used to treat the disease.
