When do you actually know the coil is clean and not burnt out?

a few days ago when I switched coil heads on my Nova, I dry burned one a bit and the middle 2 coils turned gray, while the surrounding ones look blackish.

i went to clean the coil head I was using tonight, and looked at the one I had dry burnt the other day; the middle 2 coils are still gray.

is that ash or did I fry those coils? Because if I did, I'm just going to toss the head and order a new one

theres no ash in vaping... and usually if your silica or wire is black its from juice build up/burnt juice.
the coils are all part of 1 wire. If you dry burn and the coils still turn red the coils are still vaping.
you dont want to be dry burning a new coil head though, you only dry burn if the coils are black already.
(from juice build up) If you can, drip a couple drops, do a couple dry burns till the coils glow.

if its still producing good vapor there is no reason to get rid of it. and if its not, keep trying here n there.
sometimes the best, longest lasting heads, need to be broken in. or they need to get through a bad period.

If the coils all glow red when you were done dry burning it should be ok. Could be some baked on residue which you could just try to scrape off. Sometimes they can get enough stuff on them it's wise to give them a second rinse and dry burn. I usually don't get the baked on stuff except when using high percentage VG juice.
