I've never dry burned before (I know you're thinking how is that possible after almost a year of vaping, but I'm lazy). My purple Splitfire is starting to give me burnt hits, not dry one but burnt ones. I think it's from all the gunk on the coil. I'm not ready to give up on this coil yet, so how do I dry burn it? Does it just require emptying the tank and burning the gunk off the coil? Will it ruin the wicks to do that? Thanks in advance guys!

I was just trying to think of how to say it and I ran across a post from Morganmeltz that explains it perfectly

Sure thing.

I take everything apart, and let soak in hot water for a while, rinse through a few times, and shake out as much water as I can. I find hot water works better than alcohol as most of the crud seems to be burnt sugars collecting on the coil. If I'm in a hurry, I'll rinse through with some kind of alcohol afterwards to hasten drying. I then blot off the wicks, and let everything dry.

Then I do a dry burn. I'll screw just the coil/wick head part on the Ego for this. (Sometimes it won't screw on properly, so then I'll attach the head to the stem, and screw that onto the Ego.)

To dry burn, fire up the battery in about 5 second bursts until all the vapor comes off and the coils glow red across all their width. Be careful - if you fire it for too long at a time you can kill the coil. I haven't done that (yet), but do make sure you have a new head in reserve just in case.

Finally, I let the coil cool down, rinse it out to wash off any ash, let dry again, put everything back together, and I'm good to go.

Please let me know if you don't understand this or have any other questions.

The only thing that I would add, if you're using variable voltage, turn it down. I dry burn at 3.5v usually on a 2.4Ω head.

I'm Lazy this is how I do it.
It you have a VV turn it up to 4.o or just a tad higher then you like vaping....
No vv just stick on a batt with a button (not an auto) ...

Empty and not vaping, top off hold the button till it goes out.
let is sit for a few to cool some.
Do this 4 or 5-8 time always resting between pushes.
You want to see to see the coil again not just a gunk ball.
Watch the coils start to go red but not way bright red and not too long. (the coil can pop)
After the last good and long cooling..
Lean it over the sink and wash the coil with some juice 8 or so drop I would guess.
I use no nic PG for this part but your stock will do just fine.
Rinse sink,
Fill, put together and vape.
There are so many ways ppl dry burn this is just my way..

A couple other tricks to add. After the crud on the coil turns to a whitish ash, you can gently blow it off with a can of computer air. I point the little straw that attaches to the nozzle on the can, right at the coil.
Another handy item is some Dentek brushes. The little tiny brushes you can find in the teeth care section of the drug store. You can gently brush the crud or ash off the coil. Don't brush while the coil is still hot, however. You'll melt the tiny bristles on the Dentek brush.

Just to add to the above comments.
I will take a pin or my pointed tweezers and gently scrape off the white ash.
I do think the wicks will burn thru where they meet the coil , I have noticed after numerous dry burns the wick will break off there and is definetly burnt. Carto is no good at that time. Unless you are able to replace the coil and wick.

Thanks everyone, with your directions I've now dry burnt two of my Splitfire coils and they're working so much better now!! It's amazing how much better!! Now I'll be doing this from on.I'm sure it'll extend the life of these coils, that are already about a month old, and now doing just fine! Considering I blow through at least 8 ml's a day now that I've gone down to 6 mg nicotine that's awesome for coil lifetime. Now it'll be cool to see how long I can go before changing a head:D
Thanks everyone!
