Dr. Brad Rodu reviews a recently published journal article on dual use of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco.

In a review of 17 published research studies that had data on the health risks from dual use versus those from smoking, almost all of which have appeared since 2002, Kimberly Frost-Pineda and colleagues conclude that “…there are not any unique health risks associated with dual use of smokeless tobacco products and cigarettes, which are not anticipated or observed from cigarette smoking alone.” The authors further commented that “some data indicate that the risks of dual use are lower than those of exclusive smoking.”

Vocalec, I know this is off subject, well kinda, but I thought the FDA case was supposed to be heard in sept. so what happened?

5card, you're not spending enough time in the news subsection. I'll cover for Elaine so she can get some sleep and keep her knife sharp. Had the appeals hearing a week or so ago. The panel of judges will go back, make a decision and spend weeks/months writing it up and the next step will start up. That was the short version.

The actual transcript is over in news and the CASAA site I believe. It's an interesting read and frustrating to a degree with some of the lies Klien, the FDA attorney, forwarded. The one that drove me a bit bonkers was her talking about Favor (the smokeless cigarette that was being developed in the late 80's). The FDA stomped on it, the developers sold the product to a company in Sweden and it was never heard from again. Of course the FDA approved the Nicotine inhaler some 10 years later which was very similar.

She acted as if it was decided that the Favor cigarette was declared a drug device when all that really happened was the FDA told them that they were going to declare it a drug device (sound familiar) and the company didn't file suit. Probably didn't have the money to or to go the drug route. Just the FDA protecting their client again, Big Pharma. JMHO of course.
