Direct dripping is done with an atomizer, not a carto. An atomizer doesn't have the stuffing inside that must be saturated in order to work like a cartomizer.
The advantage of direct dripping is that flavor, throat hit, and vapor production are not influenced or obstructed by other factors. There are other ways to vape that come close to what dripping is like, but none of them taste quite the same.

So here is a common way to set up an atomizer for dripping:

    2: 510 atomizer
    3: drip shield

Dripping is literally that. You drip a couple of drops onto the atomizer and vape. You have to continually do that every few puffs. There is a technique to it or you will flood your battery. You only do it on a manual battery.

Personally, I think it's a pain. They say it gives you the purest flavor, but if you do it wrong, it tastes horrible. I do it solely for testing new juices, and now I hardly even do that. You don't want to waste a carto until you know you like the juice so you want to test it first.

I use a clearomizer, or a fluxomizer. Those can be cleaned and reused with another flavor, whereas you can't do that with a cartomizer.

If you get a volt, there is a way to use an old cartomizer for drip testing, but you will be able to test just as well with the Phoenix. Just fill it, and vape. If you don't like the taste, you can empty it, rinse and put another flavor in.

Clearos, or cartomizers with wicks instead of poly fill are the next best thing to dripping without all the hassle.
