Dumb, so very dumb. This is a question!

I can wrap coils, they're ugly but servicable. I can even get them to fire. My issue is this: I short them. My main issue is once I go to install the coil into the deck::
How close to the posts does the coil rest? I know touching the base of the deck is an absolute no go. My issues is with the pos/neg posts. Insert wires. Tighten them up. Coil tilts sideways, pull it back out, re-insert.Fire button and coils all glow, but slowly and the ohms change out a few times and then settle in at 1.5. I'm visually impaired so it's a lot of holding the deck of to a different eye to actually see what I'm doing. Is there a set length of distance the coil should be from the posts? I know I am missing something simple here, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what the trauma is. I go in with allen wrenches and try and use that as a gauge for distance from the posts, but it's still not helping. It is all fine, until I tighten down the posts; after that, all bets are off. Any ideas? Any close up visuals anyone can point me in direction of?

I am building on a massive Tobh 28 mm atty and the holes are big enough for me to drive a truck through; I just can't seem to get the tension of my wires/distance from the posts correct.

Help?

Thank you

IMG_20141007_043909.jpgI don't really measure how far away mine are, just make sure they are not touching anything, or overlapping anywhere. I don't have the Tobh, but this is my Zenith.... bit too much cotton, but it works till I recoil :)

Edit: BTW those are 3mm coils

Get one of these or something similar :

https://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10009539/1842907-th7006-handheld-60mm-5x-magnifier-w-2-led

Keeps both hands free. Or even a stereoscopic magnifier on a headband. Doesn't cost a fortune. Is great for finicky work in confined space. Like rebuilding.
Or DIY micro-surgery ;)

I space permits, leave a piece of toothpick or paperclip or anything else that keeps 'em straight inside the coils when tightening them. Gives you a bit more control which way they gonna bend off to :)

Also might look into no res - res - no res wiring for coil building.
