If people followed proper battery care and charging procedure this kind of stuff would not happen. USB ports and I pad chargers are not proper equipment. Li po batteries are also bad imo as they do no tolerate a shock well. Use the correct smart chargers and protection pcbs people. Please, for all our sakes.

................ It's well documented that li-ion batteries are prone to exploding. This isn't one of the usual dangers which we think of in the current debate over e-cigarettes, but maybe it should be. Or at least, it should be a reminder that we need more of a regulatory structure in place to deal with them.

You mean we need a regulatory structure to deal with "stupid"??

Of the millions and millions of PV's being used in the last 8 years, how many verified battery explosions have there been? Probably somewhere around .00001%. That would be 100 out of 10M. My guess is there are more than 10m PV's that have been used in the last 8 years and probably less than 100 verified battery explosions.

Following this rationale, we will also need a regulatory structure to deal with how to take a bath, safely.

I have had more APVs over the last 4 years than cell phones, 2 or 3 to 1 to be exact. The only issue I had was with a cell phone battery which was on charge at the time. It bent and blew off the battery cover but fortunately didn't catch fire. There is always chance that they'll go thermal, ask Tesla.

The FDA has been trying to regulate stupid stupidly for many years, come on let's give them a real chance to get it right.

I'll suggest free minus taxes of course, lol... rubber suits, rose colored glasses, tinfoil hats, large diameter straws, plastic cups and cans......

I'll let them do the rest.

1 last thing, chip implants. So if u still do something stupid shock therapy applies.

I bet that phone used a li po battery. They are widely used in consumer electronics. To make things as small as possible they push the limits on batteries and heat produced by devices. During my years doing product testing I saw tablets that overheated at 90F. If properly built devices can be safe and Very rarely explode.

It would be interesting to know what the Tesla problem is about. If I had to guess It would have to do with heat build up and not enough air cooling in the packs. They use NCR 18650's and pack them very tightly together. When charge gets low they tend to heat up. That mixed with high ambient temps could be like thermal runaway. Common sense will always be needed around power. Like I would not push that car's limits in 120F heat.
