When I vape, it makes me cough. Smoking normal cigarettes doesn't (I smoke Mayfair Smooth - a lighter cigarette). Do you think that the liquid is too strong for me? I have Virginia Mist tobacco and it says 18mg on the bottle. Should I try something lower? I've ordered some different flavours which I'm waiting to come but just wondered if you guys knew or have had this problem?

FYI: This is what I've ordered:

Menthol - 10ml
Nicotine Strength

12mg/ml
British tobacco - 10ml
Nicotine Strength

12mg/ml
Very Berry - 10ml
Nicotine Strength

12mg/ml
RY4 - 10ml
Nicotine Strength

24mg/ml
Strawberry Milkshake - 10ml
Nicotine Strength

12mg/ml
Pina Colada - 10ml
Nicotine Strength

18mg/ml

Lowering you nic level should help.

What are you using to vape with and what is the Ω of your coil?

Nicotine

A "general guideline" for nicotine concentration in e-liquid to the number of cigarettes smoked per day. If you are subohming (resistance under 1.0Ω) cut these nicotine levels by at least 50%.

06 mg = 10 cigarettes or less
12 mg = 20 cigarettes
18 mg = 30 cigarettes
24 mg = 40 cigarettes

I generally smoke about 15 a day, some times less but never more than 17. I don't really know about the coil. I'm so new to this all, there's so much information on here that I'm trying to get to grips with. This is the one I have Diamond Mist Double E-Cigarette Kit: Amazon.co.uk: Health & Personal Care

It only cost me £13 and I thought it would just be a good place to start to see if I like it and then I can move on to something a little better. That 24mg one I've ordered is definitely going to be way too strong for me then. Can you dilute them? If so, what with?

Your coil is probably around 1.8Ω.

You can dilute them with VG (vegetable glycerin) - usually labeled as Glycerine (USP or BP or EU). Your local pharmacy (or even Amazon) usually sells it.

If you dilute equal amounts of your flavor with an equal amount of VG it will cut your nic level in half but will also cut your flavor in half.

Since VG is thick you may also need to add a little distilled water to thin it out (usually a couple of drops per/ml of flavor.

Can you dilute it with ordinary tap water? Sorry, don't know if that's a stupid question or not!
You could, but distilled (or even bottled) water would be better.

Another thing you could do (if you really loved the flavor) is by another bottle of the same juice in 0mg (no nic) and mix them together.

Thanks, will probably give this a go then, ESPECIALLY with the RY4.

Also, I have another question. The e-cig that I'm currently using, I'm not particularly enjoying the Virginia Mist flavour that I've got so that's why I ordered some different flavours, I'm now just wondering if I would be better off buying the Innokin Endura T18? What kind of difference am I likely to see/feel? I'm going to stick with what I've got for now but just wondered your thoughts?

It may also be just a normal part of getting accustomed to vaping -- because cigarette tobacco has a lot of chemicals added to it to make it smoother, topical anesthetics that fool your lungs into accepting something as hot and toxic as cigarette smoke. Ejuice doesn't have that.

Gee thanks, BT! Like it wasn't hard enough already!

Hi and welcome. As has been said, coughing usually means too much nic, too high a PG ratio in the juice, or a burnt coil. I don't know any way to tell you how to find out which save experiment. I don't recommend tap water for dilution, but distilled water up to 10% by volume can work. Much more and the juice doesn't wick well. I was 2 PAD smoker, 18mg nic is where I started. That may be too much for you, and 24mg almost certainly is. I recommend you try VG-- glycerin-- to dilute. It is used in many things, notably aromatherapy and skin care products, and is generally available at a well-stocked chemists.

When I started I also went right for the tobacco Juice. I soon found out I didn't like it and changed to a more flavorful type juice. As much as they try e-juice will never taste like a real smoke and I found I was chasing rainbows. Now that I found a taste that I like I am happy with it and 1 week and a half of not a single smoke touched :)

Mrs DJS smokes Mayfair Smooth. She coughs with any sort of e-cig. I've tried her on 12/18/24mg VG at 8 watts. 16/30mg in a cig-a-like (5 watts?) . 6/12mg 70% VG in some of my kit. (10 watts upwards..)
I think for many of us, it's totally normal. I coughed on E-Lites for the first 3 weeks.. .. and they hardly make enormous vapour.
Mayfair Smooth isn't a very light cigarette, actually. 0.7mg Nicotine.
Anyway. You will get used to it. The higher nic' liquids you have on order are more PG and they substitute VG as the strength drops.
You should gravitate more towards VG and see how the various strengths feel.
How old is your atomizer/coil? They can get very nasty and peppery quite fast... typical of the silica 'disposable' clearos if I remember correctly.
It does pass... it really does. :)

That's so weird. I had to go to ultra-lights over 20 yrs ago because lights made me cough up a lung, but when I first started vaping, one thing that I LOVED! was that I could get such great throat hit WITHOUT coughing! Vaping has never made me cough, unless I get in a hurry and inhale it wrong somehow.

Pretty weird; so many non-asthmatics coughing like mad over vapor, and this asthmatic never had an issue with that -- but anything over 15% VG and I can't breathe at all.

I also coughed a lot when I started vaping and I was a heavy smoker. My vape shop told me it was very common. And I often see people coughing when I let them try a vape for the first time. I don't recall how long it took me to get over that.

I coughed when I first started, but as others have said there are many different factors that could be involved. As djvapes said try some higher vg, i started with 65/35 pg/vg now at 80+ vg, which helped the coughing and i believe pg will dehydrate you more. Give it a few weeks and try different stuff as recommended above by others, especially checking your coil and wicks cuz they can get nasty. I would buy a box mod and a tank. I cannot recommend a box mod as the last one I bought was a vaporshark dna 30 a long time ago but I like temp control chips which run on nickel wire and just got tempered nickel which seems not as flimsy. I started with a device just like yours and wish I hadn't because I would have saved some money. From there I started to build my own mods like the dna200 which can give you 200 watts which is a bit overkill but hey, wth. Once you get a mod working with a tank you like, I am sure you will enjoy vaping more and mabey get you into drippers (RDA). Just research and go to vape stores to see if you can try stuff out. The vaping rabbit whole is deep....

Another factor to consider is the way you inhale the vapor. Do you Mouth to Lung inhale (puff the vapor into your mouth first before taking it in with a breath of air) or do you Direct to Lung inhale (similar to "dragging" on a cigarette where you just breathe right off the cig). Anything over 10 mg will make me cough with a DTL inhale.
