Check this out taken from here.

Although nicotine is generally considered to be the main compound responsible for the addictive properties of tobacco, experimental data indicate that nicotine does not exhibit all the characteristics of other abused substances, such as psychostimulants and opiates. For example, nicotine is only a weak locomotor enhancer in rats and generally fails to induce a locomotor response in mice. This observation contradicts the general consensus that all drugs of abuse release dopamine in the nucleus accumbens, a subcortical structure, and thus increase locomotor activity in rodents. Because tobacco smoke contains monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and decreases MAO activity in smokers, we have combined MAOIs with nicotine to determine whether it is possible to obtain a locomotor response to nicotine in C57Bl6 mice. Among 15 individual or combined MAOIs, including harmane, norharmane, moclobemide, selegiline, pargyline, clorgyline, tranylcypromine and phenelzine, only irreversible inhibitors of both MAO-A and -B (tranylcypromine, phenelzine, and clorgyline+selegiline) allowed a locomotor response to nicotine. The locomotor stimulant interaction of tranylcypromine and nicotine was absent in beta2-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit knockout mice. Finally, it was found that, whereas naive rats did not readily self-administer nicotine (10 mug/kg/injection), a robust self-administration of nicotine occurred when animals were pretreated with tranylcypromine (3 mg/kg). Our data suggest that MAOIs contained in tobacco and tobacco smoke act in synergy with nicotine to enhance its rewarding effects.

I am going to look ito this further but its thought provoking at the very least.

Very interesting read Shannon. Thanks! :)

Thanks Sallie and I've been gonna ask you about yours .. is that Harold Robbins by any chance?

Err... okay embarrassing moment here... I went shopping with my mom on Mother's Day and we ended up in Target. She was looking for a plaque she had seen a few weeks earlier because she wanted to write down the saying on it so my sister could print her a copy of it for her to dress up in a pretty frame. We finally tracked down the plaque, and this is what it said. There was no attribution, so I couldn't say who said it first.

It's all good. I'm pretty sure he's the author. I was gonna ask you which book cause I can't remember. LOL. But it seems that is the last line of a chapter and when I finished reading that chapter I lay the book down and was kind of WOW

Behind you
While everybody else worries about this stuff I'm going to go buy myself a high-risk donut from Krispy Kreme. As a matter of fact, I'm going to buy THREE of them. I will consume two with WHOLE milk. And then soak one in BWB Malty that I will then distill into the ultimate danger-juice of Donut-Nicotine goodliness. I will vape that over copious amount of Wagyu beef, potatoes, beer, and whisky. And then I will have unprotected sex tonight. Twice. I will also drive between random locations while talking on my cell phone WITHOUT a headset. And to wrap it all up before bed I will go down to the Alligator infested lake and urinate on a sleeping giant lizard. All with a Nuclear power site within a short drive.

Completely risk averse lives suck. -Magnus

Okay, I am flip flopping over this whole nicotine thing.

Am I addicted? Am I not addicted? Is it MAOI's? Is it hand to mouth? Is it a 30 year habit taking over? Is it physical or psychological?

Why do I want to smoke when I go over to the other board? Why do I not want to smoke when I am here?

I don't know anymore. I'm tired and frustrated of trying to figure it all out. Maybe I just don't want to know - I'm happy being a vaper and not a smoker. Why isn't that enough?

Maybe I just need more coffee.

Actually, it's funny you mention it. The same thing has been happening for me.

Even though I really don't want one and I know it going to taste like crap - for the last few days now I've really been thinking about having a smoke.

And yes, I think nicotine is my crack. I had a bit of trouble in the beginning when I started vaping giving up the smokes - I would still have a few puffs on a smoke here and there.

They talk about being addicted to the other chemicals in cigarettes - I think that was some of my problem too - the other was simply coming to the realization that I could finally quit smoking and say goodbye to my 30 year old friend the cigarette.

It stands to reason if you have to reaffirm your commitment to something each and every day, then somewhere within you is the fear that you will fail, and the temptation to give in. That little demon is always there, waiting to pounce on you in a weak moment. Is that freedom?

For us, seeing it brought up time and time again that we're only fooling ourselves, it's only natural for a little self-doubt to creep in. For me it was only for a split second, but definitely there. But I'm on to the little guy now, but he's back in his cage with extra strong locks. :)

Sallie,

You ARE there - you are a member - I have you in my friends list over there.

Unless you didn't sign up as MustangSallie and I am now friends with someone else who resembles you!

Have you tried posting lately?

We're both members, but we haven't been added to the proper group that is able to post freely. That's a manual thing that has to be done by the board admin.

What did anyone say with trouble posting? My first post said, "Hi, I'm Michael". It was approved by morning, and that was it. I can post. Maybe the key was not posting anything that says a word about you.

I believe my first post was in response to one of the initial hate threads, probably trying to affirm that we weren't trolls or e-cig shills hell-bent on leading everyone who had already quit back to the dark side (I forget exactly, it was a week ago). The second post I made was in the introduction thread, and I did say I used an e-cig to quit smoking. I've made a few more posts since the first 2, and none have appeared

It's not in my nature to flame under even the worst circumstances, so I don't think I posted anything wrong... maybe strongly worded, but not inappropriate.

Like I've said a few times, I don't think we're addicted, but perhaps dependant. And I can live with that just fine! :)

I don't know anymore. And you know what? I don't really care. If I am addicted - so be it.

I'm tired of second guessing myself and my motives for vaping.

I don't smoke anymore - that's what's important to me.

Your right Sallie - it is enough.

I thought about this quite a bit myself.

I think support plays a big role in quitting anything addictive. Some people get their support from family and friends, some through the various "Anonymous" groups, and others through forums. I think it's admirable that many members at QSMB have been around for so long offering their support to new members who want to quit smoking, but I'm starting to wonder why... Here are a couple possibilities I came up with:

1. They quit using this support system and they want to PIF.
2. They are insecure in their own quit and still need the positive reinforcement others provide. Without said reinforcement, they will likely start smoking again.

I would like to think they are still there because of #1, but I can't help but feel due to some of the comments about the "changes" that have been made there that some of them fall under #2. I (obviously) can't speak for everyone, but if I had a successful quit going (let's say 1 year), I think it would drive me crazy to stay there and continue posting. Why? I don't want to continue exposing myself to the very activity I quit. If I do, I'm far more likely to fall of the wagon.

Morning all :)

Hey Everybody!

Sorry, yesterday was a very sad day for me. One of my oldest cats has been having some really severe health issues. I had to put her down yesterday. I'm heartbroken but know it was the best thing for her so she wouldn't suffer. :(

Kat - I'm sorry to hear about your loss :( It always breaks my heart to hear about one loosing their pets. They become family and its always hard when we have to loose them.

XBB,

Thanks about my cat - I appreciate it - from you and everyone here.

I'm going to ask as I value your insight. This seems for the most part to be over now with the exception of a post or two trying to bait us into an argument by the "group".

Do you think this is really over and we have been for the most part "accepted"? Or are they just laying in wait for us to screw up somewhere so they can get us banned?

With everything that has gone on over there I'm a little paranoid when these people start being "nice".

Lol..had to laugh at your last line. Yup, I'd be paranoid too. No, I don't think it's over by a long shot. That little group just HATES you for moving in on what they consider "their board" After all, they've been running and calling the shots on it for years now.

You do one wrong move and they'll be all over you. They're just waiting and hoping for that to happen. What you think might be acceptance is only that Fred has finally laid down the law (so to speak) to them. It'll cool for a bit, but after awhile when things seem to be settled down a bit out it will come again. That board goes in cycles and has been for years. Quiet for about 2 weeks and all of a sudden WHAM!

I personally think you guys have been doing a wonderful job on that board..extremely respectful, considering. It's just such a shame that a bunch of old timers stuck in their ruts can't see new developments like the ecig happening and consider that it might indeed be helpful. I myself didn't know very much about the ecig until I joined here, but I thought it was in my best interests to have a look at what I consider a bunch of pros like yourselves have to say about it. I've learned some incredible things about it and in the process I also saw a forum full of respectful people that I really like.

You know, for all the lurking they do over here you'd think one of them would actually come away with something like..hey, these are really good folks here..and very helpful to each other in quitting smoking...and for those that want to, quitting nicotine. Lots of knowledge here.
I'd like to think someone would actually come up with something like hey, that's a nice board with nice people..maybe we should try that. To much to expect I suppose with a bunch of bullies using a board for their own pleasure and stuck in their ways. Sheeeeeesh!!

So, I would say continue on your respectful ways over there, but watch yourself.

Sorry I cannot watch heavy metal or hard rock music videos, because you see I'm an addict. If I just watch one I'm libel to put on my leather jacket, studded bracelets, headband, grab my air guitar, crank it up and annoy my wife for yet another 8 hours. :headbang:

Nah, really that was cool, thanks for sharing. :)

I love metal and classic rock...

For something a bit different check out Volbeat. They're a really interesting group from Denmark. Their style is unique; think Metallica meets Presley and Cash...

YouTube - ‪Volbeat Video - Radio Girl‬‏

Don't worry, it's in English.
