E-cigarette use rare in non-smokers - survey

(Reuters) - The use of electronic cigarettes in England is largely confined to smokers and ex-smokers, according to a government-backed survey, the latest report to suggest that e-cigarettes were not attracting new smokers.

The Health Survey for England found that among men who were not smokers, only 1 percent had ever tried e-cigarettes, while 29 percent of smokers and 6 percent of ex-smokers said they had.

Proportions were similar for women, said the survey, which was published on Wednesday.

The latest findings are in line with other surveys -- one published last month by Britain's Office for National Statistics and one commissioned by the health charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH).

Hm.. looks like the ANTZ can stick their "gateway" whining where the sun never shines :D

So now we have ASH, ONS, and HSE all thoroughly debunking the glANTZ "gateway" fantasy. Of course, ANTZ are willfully ignoring all this and only cite the dubious Benowitz Polish school study.

which brings us back to Peter Hajek:
Electronic cigarettes have a potential for huge public health benefit

The field of public health is not always rational. Ideology and morality can play at least as big a role as evidence and logic. Public health policies struggle with ideology in areas ranging from abortion to harm reduction strategies in drug addiction and sexually transmitted diseases. One of the possible explanations of the EC controversy is that for some tobacco control activists, any nicotine use is ‘drug abuse’ and abhorrent even if it were to carry no physical health risk.

When encountering evidence that EC are much safer than cigarettes, do not attract non-smokers, and promise to reduce smoking-related morbidity, people with this ‘moral stance’ look for objections and counterarguments. Evidence is not needed to discover the truth as the truth is ‘self-evident’ and there is a higher purpose. Evidence is just a tool to gain converts. Nicotine use should be eradicated, not allowed to morph into an activity akin to drinking coffee.

An earlier version of the WHO Report to the Framework Convention on tobacco Control (FCTC), now off-line, betrayed its missionary ethos when it stated that the group’s target is nicotine addiction (that is, nicotine use) ‘independently from its source’ (that is, whether it impacts physical health or not).

The whining and screeching of the ANTZ reminds me of the "abstinence only" nonsense that the Puritans insisted on, to combat AIDS. Quit or die, you know?

See this wonderful blog post: Are e-cigarettes the new condom? (caution: mentions sex)

Well, I can understand that. My vaping has not been cheap. :p

My first six months where I reduced my appx. 50 cigs a day to 6 plus vaping showed no savings. However quickly closing in to my 5th year without a drag on a cigarette, I'm spending a year what I used to spend in less than a month.

In other news, a new study shows people not on watercraft rarely wear life preservers.

Excellent!

I've been hit with the gateway theory, good to have numbers backing up a rebuttal.

That is precisely why I posted this here. As ammunition against the stupidity of those who repeat the ANTZ lies. And I am happy that you find it helpful :thumb:
