I still carry an eGo style unit every day as it's compact and with the right cartos does a great job. I use Resurrector cartos from CCV and they're about perfect for 3.7V. I use the 900 mah batteries as they're only a tad bigger than the 650s and still fit nicely in my pocket, many use 1100 mah for the capacity but I prefer the smaller size for carrying around. I always have spare batteries and cartos in my little carry case and I keep chargers at work, in the truck, and at home so I'm never "stranded" with a dead battery.

There are tons of options in PVs but my home unit is an EPower kit also from CCV. I like the fact that batteries are cheap and easy to find. I also have an Apollo VTube Mini which is an inexpensive way to experiment with variable voltage. Folks will be along soon extolling the virtues of the eGo Twist (I have 2, gave to my son) but even the 650 is very long and if you crank up the volts it needs to be charged often. So, you'll need at least 2 of them and for the same price you can buy a VTube (Lavatube clone) that uses cheaper batteries...

FWIW - I had the Joyetech eGo-C as my second kit after my 901t kit couldn't cut it any longer. The batteries that come with those kits are good quality, but they are regulated to 3.2 to 3.3v so you're best vape experience will likely come from LR (low resistance) cartomizers or clearomizers. I still use the eGo-C batteries from my kit with the LR Vision CE4+ clearomizers (aka Stardust), and they work good for when I'm on the go.

My recommendation for cost a cost effective upgrade would be to get a couple of Vision CE4+ clearomizers, one each in low and standard resistance, a couple of LR cartomizers to try like the Smoktech Resurrector single coils at 1.7 ohms and the Boge 1.5 or 2.0 ohm cartomizers, and a Joyetech eGo-C Twist battery to try your hand at variable voltage. This should allow you to try different options and get an idea of what will work for you going forward.

You can do better than an eGo. The eGo has the smallest voltage of any personal vaporizer on the market (3.4 volts). In the same physical size category, the Kgo or E-Power would be better options, as they are both 3.7 volts. The EVO is a good entry level selectable/variable volt model that is also the same size. Another step up would be the 5 volt GLV2.
