Because they don't care about getting people to vape or fighting the FDA. They're movie makers, not CASAA activists. They care about making money.

And if just one soccer mom gets in a huff over her children seeing an e-cig in a movie, they lose money. That's pretty much the bottom line.

well what about all the movie where they smoke analogs.....hmmmm

You'll notice that nowadays, the only smokers you'll see in movies are the bad guys. The "heroes" never smoke. Anti-smoking even showed up in a galaxy far, far away... in one of the newer StarWars films (where Anakin is offered a "death-stick").

Only the evil villians smoke, never the heroes. Like the black hat/white hat in old westerns. Indoctrination 101.

Exactly. The good guy never smokes, unless he's an anti-hero who has to be "saved" by love or some crap. Yes, I'm cynical.

At this point in time, e-cigs are still a niche issue. The only people who would care, or even know what it was, are invested in it. It would be out-of-place and distracting in a movie. E-cigs aren't "bad, but cool" like cigs. And movie makers have no reason why they should care about promoting e-cigs.

It could cost them money, and adds nothing to the movie, unless the movie is ABOUT e-cigs.

Anything identifiable seen in a movie now (and to some extent TV series and pop videos) is a result of 'product placement'. Think of all the examples of precise brands seen and you will understand this. This factor makes up a measurable proportion of the project income - sometimes all of it. Lady Gaga's last two vids were entirely financed by product placement, including some e-cigarettes (although I don't think that was particularly successful).

We spoke to the Supplier who funded that, and they will most likely do more in this line. If you see an identifiable ecig brand, then you'll know it's happened. And as more stars switch to ecigs, it becomes more likely. However you have to keep in mind the New Puritanism as it's dedicated to eliminating nicotine, alcohol or anything else remotely pleasurable from movies and anywhere else. And those people - the anti-Communists, religious fanatics, or whoever else with the political and financial clout at the time - have a lot of power.

Don't expect logic to triumph, the only place that happens is in a nursery school class.

I have wondered about all of the smoking in the Syfy channel show, "Caprica". This would have been a perfect e-cig opportunity, and a more appropriate (read futuristic) alternative. It seems odd to me to see them smoking cigarettes (and even smoking a hookah) with all of the robots and other futuristic technology around them.

Rolygate nailed it. Smoking is in movies usually because BT pays to get the product in there. Sometimes if it's necessary to be historically accurate or just for style it's there too. Boardwalk Empire has lots of smoking and no identifiable product. They took the time to make the cigarettes look like they did back then (no filter, different kind of packs, etc). Stylistically I think of Tarantino and the "red apple" brand of cigarettes I think he made up for his movies.

For much of the 20th century cigarettes are part of the culture and should be in movies and TV shows, especially ones from 1900-1980.

Ecigs will be in there when they make enough of a cultural impact and/or there is enough money to pay to get them in.
