It's what is called 'article writing seo', a way to get links. The theory is that Google sees it as genuine information and a genuine link, if it is within an article. Like any kind of marketing it can be ignorable, inventive, or spammy.

For example when Blu or similar do it, they pay someone who can do a reasonable job that doesn't offend the eye or other sensibilities.
