Awwwwww Thanx Mike. I will be at work. I work in a mental hospital. The will call a code white a natuarl disaster. I am no where near the ocean like 300 miles but they are saying extreme rain maybe a foot or more and High winds up tp 100mph. My apt is in a two family house on higher ground. Hopefully all will be well when they finally let us leave work. Maybe it will go out to sea. fingers xx

I kmow I am prob over reacting. I just worry because I won't be home. I only live a few blocks from work. But a friend said he would take Lox if it is gonna be bad :)[/QUOTE

You said if it hits they won't let you leave. Who are they to stop you. No one would keep me from my dogs.

Well they can't stop you from leaving.... but I do know here in Florida it is made clear upon hire that you are part of their disaster plan and in the event of a hurricane it is mandatory you are at the facility for prep., during and after the storm. The year we got Charlie, Wilma and Francis back to back (2004?) some facilities reported nurses who did not show up to the board of nursing claiming they abandoned their patients. The governor stepped in and said they can't do that, but they could fire those who did not comply with policy.

Dogs are not big fans of bad weather, imo. That being said water where you are is a bigger concern for sure. The insurance big wigs have started (bout 4 years back) to increase rate in ny and south for hurricanes cause of the way places are built up that way..My belief is they are going to come down the coast and increase everyones rates to make they in line with florida, goergia, etc.The trade off for animals here is when a storm actually hits everyone is around and they love the closeness of everyone involved.A pet sitter if its close would be a great solution if feasible.

Yup, those were the huricanes that left us stuck at sea for an extra 5 days on the cruise ship tipping back and forth! I never would have remembered those names!

When we finally made port we drove by our old house and the roof was gone, but no one was hurt.

Kellie, my thoughts are with you and Lox!

Bov all will be well if you are prepared. I think that the worst part of it for you may be the flooding. If she rides the coast and stays out over the water moving slowly as they predict it will dump a whole lot of water and keep its strength longer from being over the warm ocean.

In the case of strong winds and if trees start flying around along with other objects treat it like a tornado and go to the strongest room in the middle of the house :)
We foolishly rode out Hugo at ground zero (never again) and had our roof blown off with 12 large pine trees ending up inside our house with us in it. We had 4 adults, 1 child and 2 gerbils in a very small bathroom and we made out OK :) Being prepared and having a plan is key :)

In the 10 years I lived in South Florida, I don't remember a huricane that was not supposed to be heading right for us in Palm Beach county! None of them ever hit us and if memory served correct at the time they had not been hit with a huricane of any power in several decades (the photos of the last big one to hit were the really old fasioned black and white photos that look more brown and dark grey) That didn't stop us from draining some water out of the pull, bringing in the Orchads, filling the tub etc. And the news had no doubt that Andrew was headed for us as well.

That was why when Francis (or one of them) hit in 04' they were completely not prepared. We made port in Miami shortly after it hit and everything was back to running from Miami to Dade already. Power, water, planes were flying. We drove into Palm Beach. No power, no water, gas stations closed, huge lines for people to get water etc. We stayed 2 days and it was still a mad house with nothing running. During that trip, I was in Orlando, Port Canaveral, Miami and Dade, all of which had more damage from the three huricanes then Palm Beach and all of which were up running. It had been so long since PB had been hit, they were not prepared!

The latest track for Irene has her rolling right over us :(
Yep, not looking good. I hope it changes direction and goes back out to sea or loses power before it hits NH. My 200 year old house won't stand up to 100mph winds. Heck, most of the town won't be standing. My town is somewhat small and founded in the 1800's so most of the buildings are old. We're stocking up on supplies as we speak, just in case.

Complacancy can be a very dangerous thing indeed. That is one reason that I cringe when I see people talk of hurricane parties and the like :)

I have to admit, I've been to more then one huricane party... But my house was always taken care of first, my pets were always taken care of and heck I am not in charge of disaster control (or whatever the official title is) of Palm Beach County! And I was MUCH younger then, lived in florida from 20 - 30 years old.

Now we just have blizzard parties or negative 40 degree below zero parties, which usually includes huddling around the wood burning stove and hoping the power doesn't go out!

Sounds like most of the towns that were around me during the very short time I lived in NH. Are you close to hampton beach?

Well all of you in the path make preparations please and be safe !!!

Yes, I hope you are all safe and prepared. And if you are close but the news says you are not in the path pease be prepared as well. No one in Homestead thought Andrew would hit there, the news had it going no where near Homestead!!!

I'm far south of Hampton. I'm about 45 minutes south of Dartmouth College.

Well this won't be a good weekend. Not only do I have to worry about family in NC, NY and New England, but I have the hubby taking the son into serious bear country for a camping trip. I would have preffered they camped else where, but apparantly the fishing is good! And I am a worrier, so I'll be watching the news all weekend for the huricane and keeping my fingers crossed that hubby and son don't become bear food (no cell reception so I'll just have to wait till they are out of there saturday to make sure they are OK) To top it off, I forgot to tell him about the huricane and he does not know his mother and brother are right in the path of it in NC, he's been packing and getting ready for camping and I don't think he has read or watched any news. Only good news here is Mom isn't flying into NYC until Monday!
