For those of you in the path of Irene, I thought I'd share some things I do to prep for a hurricane. Some are very obvious some perhaps you haven't thought of. I keep a hurricane bin/supply kit of supplies that I restock and check every June (beginning of hurricane season) - Flash lights, at least one for each person and extras with LOTs of batteries for each along with battery operated lanterns and candles. Battery operated radio, and battery operated tv, book lights. Decks of cards, board games (not just for kids, a few weeks without power gets really boring), a few good books I've been meaning to read. Secure important documents (birth certs., etc) in zip lock/water proof bags, and put them in a secure place. French press or camp type coffee pot ( I gotta have my coffee).
Start making ice - bagging it, fill empty milk jugs or soda bottles with water and freeze them they will keep your fridge/freezer cold longer. Buy bags of ice to fill ice chests. Fill bath tubs with water (especially if you have well water w/ pump, if power goes out... you have water to bathe and flush with).
Have a weeks worth of medications/prescriptions your family may need. Get cash, ATMs may be out post storm. Fill tanks for gas grill, or have enough charcoal etc on hand for cooking. Fill gas tanks of your cars. Stock bottled water, canned food (yumm), don't forget to stock up on pet food/kitty litter etc, be sure to buy snacks, it's amazing what you crave when you can't get it lol.
If you are in an evacuation zone... evacuate, don't be silly, riding out a storm is dangerous. Board up/shutter, a strong CAT 2 - CAT 3 can produce big gusts, tape on windows does not protect you, it just makes bigger pieces of flying glass- a 90 mile and hour coconut flying through the window, ok wait a tree branch, someones flower pot etc flying at your windows. Pick up around your yard, trim loose tree branches, if it's not secured it may fly. Have a plan, if you have to leave your home.. know where you will go. Prep early, supplies run low very fast. Stay safe, enjoy some good old fashioned family time. Note: there was a spike in pregnancy after the 2004 hurricane season here in so. Fl - so have fun and stay safe =)

Wow... you are very prepared. I was pretty lazy about things when I first got to Florida ( just out of college so I had an excuse, not even going to say what I "stocked" up on before Andrew ) but I was there for 10 years and even as I matured and thought I was being responsible I did not do half of what was on the list. I wish I had your list way back when! I cleaned the yard, drained the pool, filled the tub, got some canned food and made sure I had batteries in the flash light and I thought I was prepared.

Thats an interesting fact about the 2004 huricanes, I was actually there visiting after those, thank god I was not a statistic on that list... 2 are enough for me.

As awesome as your list is (and it really is ) I think you missed something that I would now have on my list. Charge as many extra PV batteries as possible, keep juice and attys/cartos close by so they do not get lost in the dark!

Stay safe all and read minx's list... it is one of the best I have seen.

We have tons of water and are stocked up on food and other misc supplies. We're charging and loading our e-readers with books. I wish I had more batteries for my Buzz though. I have to call in for a refill on my Xanax tomorrow. I'm going to need it. Latest tracking info: Hurricane Irene: Current Status and Forecast

I'd start getting sick today and stay home w/my dog. Anyone here on this forum that knows me, knows I'm not jesting.

Well they can't stop you from leaving.... but I do know here in Florida it is made clear upon hire that you are part of their disaster plan and in the event of a hurricane it is mandatory you are at the facility for prep., during and after the storm. The year we got Charlie, Wilma and Francis back to back (2004?) some facilities reported nurses who did not show up to the board of nursing claiming they abandoned their patients. The governor stepped in and said they can't do that, but they could fire those who did not comply with policy.

My thoughts and best wishes are with all of y'all facing the storm in the next few days...I got lucky down here as we'll only catch a llitle tiny bit of wind it looks like. I hope the same luck holds for each and everyone of you.

Being prepared is necessary, but a little good fortune never hurts. :)

I hear ya there. My gf's mom was freaking out more than we were. We have 4 dogs and cat to tend to (the cat and 2 of the dogs ours). They're not bothered by the weather much, though they haven't experienced anything like this before.

I'd be thinking about it to, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. If you want to be able to continue feeding your dog, you can't be getting fired!

We have 4 dogs, a hedgehog and a chameleon. They would be the first on my list if I was preparing for a storm (well maybe not the chameleon) We've even setup a generator to keep the hedgie at the proper temp and lighting as we have had several all day planned power outages this summer and the hedgie is very particular about temp and lighting. So the power has gone out all day almost once a week this summer and the hedgie and chameleon have power while we sit in the dark! After the kids the puppies are always my first priority (and one of the beagles, won't say which is always on the top of the list)

The latest info on weather.com is showing Irene hitting land as a Cat 1. They also say the eye of the storm has been deteriorating and hasn't regenerated. We may get lucky and it will die out before too long. Either way, a Cat 1 is better than 2 or 3.

Yup... I've been checking that link often since you posted it. I have a ton of family in several states all in the path. I saw it drop down to a cat 1 and feel much better. I was on the phone with my brother in law when it got downgraded. He is right in NC right were it will hit first and we both decided it was'nt going to be that bad. (But he is a surfer and usually surfs through huricanes, so his opinion should be taken with a grain of salt)

So it looks like everyone should be safe, but still wet! Flooding should be the biggest concern now. So be safe and try to stay dry!

I was just checking in on Kellie. I hope that all is well for her and Lox :) And I certainly hope that she is not one of the 300,000 under evacuation orders in NYC where they only have enough shelter space for 70,000 and not even enough beds for 70,000! That just blew my mind when I heard them say that this morning lol That is just insane to only have enough shelter space for 70,000 in NYC!

I doubt that this storm is going to be all that bad in the long run and the media is just sickening already with all the hype. I have to laugh when they show the idiots on the weather channel broadcasting from the beaches that have been evacuated. One of these days they may regret their stupidity :)

Kellie and Lox should be fine. She is pretty far upstate and inland and last I heard they are only evacuating the city of New York.
