lol try iirc. it's a little more modern and easier to use than .....X ( i say this after many years of .....X usage.) but it's still a term based irc client.
easy to run in a screen so you can "always be there".

Thanks for the tip!! I guess .....X is quite hard to use these days! I like that it ran in a terminal and had a totally weird name :D

lol it still runs in a terminal. iirc does to. it's just a bit easier on the care and feeding than .....x is.
at least that's my opinion. you may just wanna stick with what you know. usually iirc is the default irc client with distros and isps (the few that give you shell access) now.

way back in the day, when you got your dial up account from an isp you used to get a shell that you could ssh/telnet/etc into. most places have stopped that due to the script kiddies etc. but .....X or irssi was almost always a part of that.
and yeah, you can put ubuntu server on it and i /think/ it comes with it. if not then you can apt-get it fairly easily. it also comes (iirc) some decent gui irc clients bundled with it.
if you don't want to install windows, just go to mIRC: Internet Relay Chat client and download that. that used to be the de-facto irc client for windows.
