I'm surprised it took this long, honestly. It's sad though that folks are so attached to their nicotine they can't make it for 2-3hrs. If it's that difficult just use an alternative such as snus in something like 16mg.

Exactly what I was thinking. I don't vape when I go out just to give it a rest once in a while. Other than that, Congrats on the 5+ years without cigarettes xpl0it. Thanks to the ..... who did this as as well as a big thank you to the airline industry for involving other passengers in this obviously non-emergency based bull..... Here's a magical idea...try investigating (even the tinniest bit) If the smoke detector goes off in a bathroom and some1 just stepped out of it (pretty simple math, huh Bob) Have the person responsible take the consequences for their actions. Also, the title of the article is wrong (I know the person who posted it didn't make the actual article) Should be titled "Airlines refuse to take legitimate actions against legitimate issue, making it every1 else s problem"

A: I am not psychic and cannot tell before hand if some1 is going to go do something they know they shouldn't be doing in an airline bathroom

B: As far I know, holding some1 against their will (and without the aid of the 1st letter) would make that assault or kidnapping (depending on the police charge you with/what DA/Judge you get)

C: Being that this is the case, don't involve paying customers in the stupidity of what 1 (or even a handful) may be doing.

I have a Kayfun that does pretty good in the vaopr department when I want it to. It is also pretty stealthy enough that I can do it in a cube farm office and not get noticed. Hold the vape in and it gets super thin that it is almost invisible.... Rocket Science!!!

Something is not right. I don't think an e-cig can set off a smoke alarm. And there is no mention of a citation. Flight crew usually will investigate immediately and hand a citation to the passenger while the alarm is reset and the flight continues as normal. If the pilot had enough concern to make an emergency landing than I'm thinking that the alarm malfunctioned and would not turn off.

I think an e-cig is being blamed for a malfunction because the investigators can't find a better explanation

I don't really think this is what he should have done. It's time to get help when you're sticking your head in toilets so you can get your fix.

Well, here's a novel thought: they could just allow people to vape in their seats. It's not a cigarette, there is no smoke, so it's not going to give any ANTZ cancer. If they actually TREATED their passengers like adults, then their passengers would no doubt BEHAVE like adults.

As for going 2-3 hrs without a vape? Nope. That's why I'll probably never set foot on an airplane again, at least until airlines get their heads out of their buttocks about vaping. But then, I had already reached this decision when the TSA decided that anyone getting on an airplane was a candidate for a grope fest.

I do believe a sufficient amount of vapor could definitely set off a sensitive enough smoke alarm. They generally work by measuring the alpha particle emissions of a small amount of radioactive material. Generally small smoke particles would block some of these emissions from the source to the detector, thus triggering the alarm. Water vapor being far less effective at blocking these particles would simply require a huge amount of vapor to trigger the alarm. Though people have been vaping in their houses without ever setting off the smoke detector, to that I would imagine that the detectors we encounter everyday are no where near as sensitive as those used on aircraft.

As for not being given a citation, the FAA does not currently explicitly ban vapes on a plane, so the offender was not technically doing anything to warrant a fine, but having recently flown SW they do state in the preflight not to use e-cigs. Although forcing an aircraft to divert course and make an emergency landing for anything but a medical emergency should definitely come with that person having to pay everyone else's airfare.

I can say with 100% certainty that I do not ever ever EVER want people vapin' on my plane. It's bad enough when people wear too much perfume/cologne, when someone throws up, or even brings a bucket of chicken with them,

I don't buy it drip. Bathrooms are well ventilated. And a pilot usually will not make an emergency landing because someone smokes in the lavatory. Also there is no need to gather any additional information since the flight crew would already know who set off the alarm. They bust smokers more often than most of us realize.

I don't know about this story, but it's certainly possible to trip an optical smoke alarm by vaping. That happened to me just a few days ago. Ionizing alarms are supposedly more difficult to trip by vaping, but not impossible. Not sure what kind of alarms are commonly used on airplanes.

I just thought this part was particularly pitiful

The airline said 118 customers and five crew members who were on board the plane had to wait to get off it until Fire Department and law enforcement officials could investigate.


s'cuse me folks, we saw smoke, the plane could be on fire.......so stay where you are for hours while we figure it out or you burn up first!

That Korean air woman that interfered with a flight leaving could face up to 10 yrs in prison so that tells me, they don't play about these things. Sounds fishy to me or that we're not getting all the info

I'm with you Andria, when they decided they could take essentially pornographic photos with those scanners, and grope folks, that was when I decided flying was a no go for me. But I am fortunate that the little family I have lives in the same town. I know some folks have to fly.

I always worried about other people freaking out if they saw 'vape' on a plane. I bring mine carry on and stealth vape in my seat. I also regularly take 8-12 hour flights so its kind of a must (especially since its right there).

Is your smoke alarm optical or ionizing. Optical alarms are triggered by vapor.

I agree. Sitting in an airplane for 3-4 hours without doing anything else will probably make me want to vape too, lol.

Folks, are you ashamed to be smokers or ecig users? I am not. Vapor doesn't cause any harm to any one because it's not like second-hand smoke! I really think we should be allowed to vape in an airplane with designated vaping area, without bothering anyone else. You have your freedom not to smoke or vape, but I should have my freedom to vape!. But for now, just bring some duct tapes along with your ecigs to the restroom.


Btw, why should there be designated smoking area? why shouldn't there be a designated non-smoking area? lol.
