Is this true? Don't see how it can be. If only absorbed by the mouth and nose, maybe we're really not getting as much nicotine as we thought.

This would be interesting if true and would explain some of the discrepancies in user experiences. Do you have a link to reference your source?

There does seem to be a wide range of experience between the level of nicotine absorption. I wonder if it could be partially based on inhaling technique (none, mouth, direct to lung).

I don't know about that, I seem to be way more satisfied with the ecig than I was with analogs. I have only been using my ecig for 2 days now and I am finding that after just 3 or 4 puffs I'm satisfied.

My first day, yesterday I actually felt like I got too much nicotine and I only used it 4 maybe 5 times total no more than 5 puffs at any given time.

My only disappointment is that the carts aren't lasting that long. I had one that I put in last night right before bed ( about 11. pm. )dry up on me around noon today and I had only had 4 or 5 puffs before bed, about the same this morning and at noon so I got maybe 15 puffs out of it?

I used to smoke about half a pack daily of Marlboro red 100's so for me to be satisfied at no more than 5 puffs 4 times a day I'd say the nicotine is being absorbed just fine in the lungs. Then again that's just my experience.

Apparently the carts I have are full strength ( I bought my kit at my local smoke shop ) and the clerk said they were " Marlboro strength "

yes, Dr. Laugesen believes nicotine from an e-cig is absorbed by the upper air ways. He says this is because the nicotine dose and particle size are too small to ensure deposition in the alveoli or bronchioles within the lung.

He does not mention whether the alkaline nature of the vapour is a factor as some suspected on the forum some time back.

He believes an e-cig user will need 72 puffs on an e-cig (16mg) to match the nicotine content in one shallow inhaled cigarette.

He also co-authored a clinical trail (pdf) recently which aimed to measure craving relief using 40 human participants all smokers from NewZeland given an e-cig, a placebo, a nicorette inhalator and factory made cigarettes. The conclusion was of course that the e-cig showed promise and it beat out the nicorette inhalator which causes a very dry throat apparently.

I wrote up a small piece summarising the clinical trial here

Source: Laugesen (the Ruyan team) reported analyses of the particle size in the mist and suggested that “The nicotine dose and particle size are too small to ensure either deposition in the alveoli or bronchioles or rapid nicotine absorption as in cigarette smoking.“ See Laugesen’s SRNT conference poster part 1 and part 2 .

This suggests a different 'mechanism' from those suggested by Nuck as a possibility fo varied user experience: how long the vapor is held before release (giving time for the smaller droplet size to deposit. Nuck's suggestions may also be true. Probably there are many contributory factors.

Other possibilities include acidity of juice; base of juice (VG or PG); effects of other juice ingredients; temperature of heater coil or other aspect of the device (such as juice flow rate), ...

I also can only handle 4-5 puffs at most.......although 10 to 20 times daily(as I was 2 packs a day before) one cart is definitely enough daily nicotine for me

my motto was: I smoke 3 packs a day.........I'd smoke 4 but I just cant find the freakin time

irregardless of the science these babies are strong

I don't think I do 72 puffs an hour but it's probably at least half that or more and my cravings are fairly satisfied but perhaps it took a little while for my body to adjust. It wasn't a clean break for me when I started using an e-cig but I think in the first couple of weeks I was pretty much off the hot ones.

IF Dr. Laugesen is correct, it seems as though we don't need to worry about using very strong e-liquid. 72 puffs on an e-cig to get the equivalent of ONE regular cigarette? That would be many cartridges worth of liquid. This doesn't seem to jive with the fact that most former smokers only using an average of 2 ml of liquid a day. I'm confused. An average cigarette has 1.2 mg of nicotine. 72 puffs on an e-cig would give one WAY more nicotine than that. Maybe very little of the e-liquid actually gets absorbed.

I have a hunch that outcomes for 'other then Ruyan'-ecigs might be showing different outcome (not to mention other then max-16 strengths used). But time will tell...

As to 'upper respiratory tracts' - to me that does not sound like just and only mouth and nose mucus - there are more parts between mouthpiece of the cig and our lungs - perhaps the tracts between mouth and lungs are far more important as nicotine-catchers then is taken into account in some posts?
