On my thread about a burnt taste with my Crown rba it was suggested I try a different type of wire. I've only ever used 26G Kanthal. I typically wrap to a 0.5 OHMs. What should I try? What would really push that flavor forward? I'm still a noob and haven't experimented much.

Changing to a different metal ie. stainless, ti, won't be night and day.
To me it sounds more like your juiceflow is having trouble keeping up.What is your juice pg/vg ratio ?
What's the inner diameter of your coils, do you get a fast ramp glow from inside out after pulsing out shorts and are you sure your grub screws are tight ?
When you pull your cotton through the coil, how tight is it ?

I do think I'm probably over wicking. It's a weird, compulsive thing where I KNOW I'm over wicking but almost can't stop myself. Right now I wrap around the infamous blue screwdriver and use Japanese cotton. I'm going to increase the diameter of my coils and resist the urge to wick tightly. My screws are tight and I pinch my coils until I'm getting a good glow from the center out/

26awg Kanthal is really a very flexible gauge wire. You can try Nichrome60 or Nichrome80, but they are softer and can't be dry fired as hot as kanthal A1 can. Wicking a coil is an art form that takes practice, just tight enough to have enough friction to stay in the coil while not being to loose that it pulls tucked when tucked down, thinner the juice you go a little tighter, thicker juice you'll need a little looser. I generally twist my wicking tight to pull it through into my coils, then the moment it starts to grab the furthest side (side it it entered from) I stop, untwist it, then shift back and forth a couple times, fluff it, cut, and tuck it in.

/hint washing your hands with Dawn dish soap before touching your cotton helps cut down on the funky fresh cotton taste from 10 to 20hits to about 2 to 5. GL

2mm is the average diameter of the blue screwdrivers I have. It's an "okay" size for a coil, depending on the head/deck you're building on.
I know what you mean about it just feeling wrong not to put as much cotton as you can in a build. But I'm breaking myself of that and reaping the rewards. I re-wicked my Griffin last night, and I had put too much cotton in it the first time. Probably used half as much cotton this time, and it's hitting great, not leaking, and no popping like before - at the same wattage. Point is, you have to experiment to find out what works.

So basically you have no way of knowing the mm diameter of which you wrap on ?

The more wick, the more juice is available to the coil ... but, like someone else said, if you pull too thick a piece of cotton through your coil (too tight a fit), it will hinder juice flow.

So, I have found out that I can have a good bit of cotton wicking by using a larger coil inside diameter. With this, I can have a slightly loose fit of my cotton going through the coil, but still have a good amount of cotton because of the larger inside coil diameter.

I wrap my coil around a 7/64" (2.8mm) drill bit .... This gives enough room to pull a little more cotton through the coil even though the wick is not real tight in the coil.

Make sense?

Burnt taste with my tanks can be caused by a coil with a too small diameter and relative to the amount of juice (and its thickness/viscosity) that reaches it, or by putting in too much wick, and sometimes by remains of old liquid when i haven't cleaned it for a while (also in the base).

The blue screwdriver is indeed around 2mm as @Douggro mentioned, but in order to get enough wick through it (which you need, otherwise it will leak) might be too narrow. Last time i built the Crown i used 24awg ID 3mm 6 wraps, 0.5 Ohms, which is a tight fit but allows you to put through enough cotton.

If you use 26awg and enlarge your diameter to 3mm, you basically use more wire so your resistance will go up. Just experiment and at some point i'm sure the Crown will work for you.

Actually, the bigger the internal diameter of you coils, the tighter you can pull your wick.

If you don't have a coil builder jig, I like to use metric screws in 2. 2.5 and 3mm and it spaces your coils as you wrap. If you go someplace that has specialty hardware you can get fine or course thread screws or bolts in metric. I prefer the fine so my coils are spaced tighter together but I usually have to squeeze them just a little. Now though, my brother gave me a coil jig kit and I am really enjoying the ease of use

Ok.......
What type of flavors are you vaping?
What wattage are you vaping at?
What PG/VG ratio are you using?
A burnt taste definitely indicates a problem with how you are wicking.
With Japanese cotton, I cut a strip approx. twice the width of my coil to start.
Remove the outer layer on each side.
I put my RDA on my mod, then I pull my wick through. If it's snug it's fine, if it starts to pull my mod over, it's too much.

Can only tell you what I'm using.

$1.64 Vaping Coil Winding Jig Tool for Rebuildable Atomizers - stainless steel / 1.5mm + 2.0mm + 2.5mm + 3.0mm + 3.5mm sections at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

This gets wrapped six times with 28 ga. Kanthal from TEMCo. This gives me a net from two coils wrapped this way of ~ .6 oHm. I wrap on the 2.5 mm inner diameter section of the tool I use. I use rayon for wick material. So far this seems to work well with squonking on a mechanical mod. People are correct in saying that to wick coils is an art form. So too, I figure is building the coils. I enjoy both weirdly enough. Did not think I had the patience for doing it. It is very relaxing though and rewarding. :)

Usually strawberry milk, but today I went straight fruit, strawberry watermelon, max VG, between 40-50 watts.
