So I've been posting questions about moving from a generic ego to a subox mini and using the prefab coils included in the starter kit. in the rba deck. I was advised to stay above 0.5 OHMs for safety, but the prefab set me right at 0.5.

I need to buy wire and a wire jig tonight. I'm trying to learn and research but have a poor grasp of OHMs and wattage.

I'd like some advice on the size wire gauge, size wire jig, and the preferred or safest settings to gain maximum flavor and that delicious warmth. I did receive wonderful advice and some links to an information table, but I really want to be safe and be sure I'm understanding what I'm doing.

Thank you.

30 gauge is a good all-round gauge.

If you have a high powered mod, you should be safe with 28 gauge.

use the steam engine calculator.

That will show you how many wraps with what gauge will give you whats ohms. It is a vaping calculator.
As far as gauges...i would buy a spool of 30ga, 28ga, 26ga for starters and expwriment. IMO YOU dont need a jog to start with, 2mm, 3mm, 2.5mm OD drill bits would be fine. But if you want close to perfect coils look into the coil master. Google that....
Flavor and warmth is subjective...so with everything i said above...experiment...whatever works for you

Thinner wire = higher resistance
Thicker wire = lower resistance
More wraps (ie: longer wire) = higher resistance
Less wraps = lower resistance
Larger wraps (larger inside diameter) = higher resistance
Smaller wraps = lower resistance

The combination of all the above will determine your resistance. Steam Engine works with all of these to give you tips on what to use.

The coil master kit is handy, ohm reader, cutters, the jig. Not absolutely necessary by any means but it gives you all you need, makes it a bit easier and easy to store.

This is a good vendor - Coil Master DIY Kit

I tried amazon at first for wire, but what is pictured as lightning vapes is sometimes not what you get. I went and ordered straight from lightning vapes themselves, still cheap and you don't end up getting atomist wire instead.

For a beginning coil builder, 28 gauge is a good starting thickness of wire for most uses, single or dual coil. Larger diameter coils (3.0 mm) will be easier to wick than smaller diameter. Coil jigs are a nice luxury, but wrapping around a precision screwdriver will suffice early on. Previous posts have already given you information on the ohm's law calculators.

Be sure to obtain a good ohm reader to measure your coils. USA brand is said to be the most accurate for sub ohm coils.

Now, can I test a coil on my mod as it has a digital OHMs reading or do I need a seperate OHMs meter?
IF your mod can read sub-ohm coils (some can't), that probably would suffice. However, the accuracy could vary. My Provari and box ohm reader measurements vary by 0.2 ohms consistently. Which one is more accurate?

This is why veterans warn not to put too much faith into cheap ohm readers when building coils under 0.5 ohms.

Some mods test coil resistance "under load", meaning it actually fires the coil to test resistance. If you're not an experienced coil builder, coils should always be measured PRIOR to actually firing them for safety reasons.

If you don't need to press the fire button to see the resistance (like with a Sigelei Zmax), it should be fine; when I first started (and for quite a while after that, actually), I just used the ohms checker on my iTaste vv3. Mainly I got a real ohms/voltage checker for when there's some uncertainty, and also because the Omnitester can also check a mod's voltage.

I think I'm dumb. Looking at the charts and calculators, I've decided 1 OHM is probably safest, but I can't see what gauge wire and how many wraps at what MM

Go to the coil wrapping page... choose which gauge you want to use, and what resistance you want it to be, and the size of whatever you're wrapping the coil around -- I use drillbits, usually 3/32 or 7/64.

28ga is probably the easiest, but without massive power, it's slow to heat; 29ga is almost as easy as 28ga, but heats up much faster at nominal wattage (8-10w). Anything higher (finer wire) will be harder to work with, and be impractical for a coil as low as 1 ohm.

You may need to plug in several computations on the calculator to find what will work for you. Then build it, measure it, fire it, wick it, and vape it.

None of us got the "right" coil on our first try. Practice and experience makes perfect.
