Hard to know. It’s a cheapo charger alright, but cheap chargers will usually take unprotected batteries. There are very few protected batteries still sold and the fuse (that’s the protection. It’s got a fuse in it. That’s it) makes the batteries longer so they often don’t fit in mods. It’s real possible the protected only requirement is just a liability thing. If it were me I’d chance it, but I’m known for being less risk averse that a lot of people here, so don’t take it as a recommendation.

Thanks bombastinator, I'm using it right now, so we both take risks lol. Is it ok that the batteries get a bit warm when charging?
...um... maybe? I dunno. It depends on how warm. Long term I would say get a better charger. The thing has a lot of space up top that implies it has protective electronics in it but it could just literally be empty space.
IMR claims it has overcharge and reverse polarity protection which are the two big ones. I would not charge different types of batteries in it at the same time for sure. The really good chargers can do that but I don’t think that is one of those.

I should throw away my wismec too probably lol
Xtar makes good chargers that you won’t have to worry about and they are priced very reasonably. If your looking for a charger capable of analyzing your batteries the opus 3100 and the liitokala 500 are two good choices. Also if you want to see some reviews on chargers search lygte dot com or something like that. It is a trusted source of charger reviews. Good luck and good choice chucking that charger.

Efest LUC 4 is my goto charger when I want to charge 4 cells at 1A. Most of the time I'm charging 1 or 2 cells and the XTAR VC4 is fine. I really don't know why charger manufacturers don't build all 4 bay chargers with the guts to charge 4 bays at 1A. So what is if costs $5 more to build. We'll all pay a little more for build quality and features.

I think that's a bad assumption. Way to many people shop on price first, specs second, and quality last.

I'm glad you are switching out your charger. It may be of some use in the vacopalypse, but you'd be on an exercise bike making power anyway, and everything will get a bit chancy in the vacopalypse.

I may purchase a mod, tank or juice on a whim (well, I have before) but batteries and chargers are worth doing the research on. Worst case, if I hate a tank, I can give it away, but worst case with batteries and chargers is far less benign.

I have been thinking of replacing my nitecore 2 bay with a 4 bay charger, but haven't quite gotten around to pulling the trigger yet... :)

I used the SODA for the last 3 years. The cells I charged were Sony VTC5A, Samsung 25R and 30Q, LG HG2.
I also checked the cut off Voltage with some of my Mods and it was ok.
I also always regularly check the temperature while charging.
But still, just because mine works well, doesn't mean yours will. Funny enough, I just yesterday ordered new cells and a XTAR VC4.

The smart ones read the reviews before making a purchase. Maybe I'm of of the few who do. I do own several chargers. There's the old Nitecore I4, the Efest LUC 4, the XTAR VC4, and an old Trustfire two bay ... the one that was infamous for starting fires back in 2010.

Right now I'm finding that some of my older batteries are giving me shorter vape time. Rather than tossing some suspects, It might be advantageous to know which are getting weak and which can reliably be paired for dual battery mods.

I'm considering this charger/analyzer right now. It has a deep cycle discharge mode that provides MAH ratings after it charges. Reviewers claim it's accurate in reporting cell condition.

In my opinion, the batteries we use in our vape setups are the most important items we use. It's important enough to insure that we are getting the best battery available from a trusted supplier who sources authentic batteries.

Those batteries deserve the best charger that we can afford. That doesn't mean we need to pay $50 for one. There are very decent quality chargers available in the $20 - $30 price range. Name brands to consider are Xtar, Nitecore, and the Efest LUC series (not the Efest Soda).

According to a FEMA study there were 50 major battery incidents last year (2016) alone and that's just the ones which made the news. The FEMA document cited suggested that approximately 80 percent of e-cigarette explosions happen during charging.
