Have any of you tried the Melo III tank that comes with a Pico kit? Wondering if it is suitable for a beginner's set up.
I got one in a kit. Never even looked at it. Pulled the Pico outta the box and sent the rest to a friend. She was no beginner but the tank was the first to take take her into DL territory. She thought she'd never go there. So I'm thinking it's not a beginner tank.

CLR compatible tanks are becoming harder to get lately. Not sure they're really for a beginner anyway. Probably better to just get throw-away coils to start with.

Let him throw away the CLRs. Or throw them to you. Where ya gonna find a cheaper throw away coil? The 1 ohm should work for a beginner?

Going to give him an iStick and a Mini Protank II first though

The Kanger coiled Protanks are a good beginner choice too. Easy start when he gets curious about rebuilding, speshly if you've got a pile of rebuilt coils to give with it.

I've only got one Tron and two Totally Wicked CLL tanks, one of which is packed away as a spare. I won't be giving any of them away, so I'd have to find and order another tank - plus more CLRs - to give. Think I only bought 2 packs of CLRs, which is a comfortable stash for me given how long they've been lasting (only used two so far - single SS rebuild on each, both of which have lasted for months of daily use).

Seems the CLR tanks are disappearing from my usual vendors.

What are you using to get off the thin layer of baked on surface gunk on your SS coils?

I use Kanthal, but to clean them, I give them a kwick and kareful dry-ish burn. I suppose one would do the same with SS.

I may try brushing with what brush I have around but probably will stick with winding a new SS coil when I rewick it only takes me a minute to wind one these days and another minute to put it on. I quit trying to be an artist with the coil which took too long haha:D everclear didn't work for me, might have if I had just drank it. :)
I quit dry burning, even light dry burning by pulsing Kanthal or SS seems to affect flavor to me, and I see the surface change color which means I've changed its surface composition. I guess I'm a picky purist
I will build 10 SS coils tomorrow.

I'm using TC pretty much exclusively, so my SS, spaced coils don't accumulate much gunk in the first place. Nothing like I used to see when I used VW mode.

Sometimes I just take the cap off the coil (leaving the wick intact), run a gentle stream of tap water over it to wash out the old eliquid, blow it out, reassemble coil and base, then pulse in TC until the wick is dry. I'll sometimes quickly "dip" the coil into the water while still hot to loosen buildup. Rinse and repeat as necessary.

For a more thorough cleaning, I remove the wick and "pulse" the coil on low wattage (5w on an iStick 30 - as low as it goes) just until I see a dull, orangish glow in low ambient light conditions (I actually turn down the room lights and/or cup my hand over the coil to reduce the ambient light). I quickly hit the still-hot coil with cold tap water, then gently "scrub" the coil with an old, very stiff toothbrush. (Not sure they even make toothbrushes that stiff these days.) Rinse and repeat until the coil is heating evenly from center outwards.

Hope that helps. I think my coils have developed a kind of shiny, maybe light gunmetal-like (?) patina. <shrug>.

Quick question: do any of you use 12mg or more in your CLR compatible tanks? Could be my build, but my throats couldn't hack it.

Constantly! I vape 15-18mg with no issues at all for me. I run 1.0 ohm coils, between 9.5-11.5 watts.

The brushed steel Pico, Mr. Wolf. I wish to know more. :w00t:
Here ya go Mr. Longo, I took some pictures for you.
The Brushed Gunmetal on the left that I just got is Fasttech SKU 4717501. On the right is my Brushed Stainless Steel (color) Fasttech SKU 4849000.
Second picture is both Pico's in their native habitat, black silicon sleeves Fasttech SKU 4717414 for a five pack, SKU 4717501 for a single.
When I first got the gunmetal it surprised me, a little more golden/brass colored than I had thought, and wondered if they had sent the wrong color, but I looked online and that's it. After a few minutes, I decided I loved the color and look - still do. Steampunk. :D
Oh, the drip tips on my Wismec Amor tanks (Totally Wicked) are my favorite narrow bore for MTL vaping, I got those from a local Madvapes. The Amor tanks have my rebuilt with SS 316L CLR coils in them of course :D

<shrug>.
I use TC as well, and I agree, a lot less gunk than regular Power control. However I vape NETs, and they do tend to cause a very thin layer to build on the SS coils I build. I also DIY non-NET juices, primarily one I make called Peppermint Ice, but I vape that in Myjet stealth pods.

Quick question: do any of you use 12mg or more in your CLR compatible tanks? Could be my build, but my throat couldn't hack it.
Haha for sure, I'm currently vaping 28 mg nic salts DIY NET juices in an Amor CLR coiled tank, at a 80pg/20vg ratio. However Nic Salts juices have less throat hit that regular nic base. I haven't tried regular nic in my CLR tanks, but I'm sure I could do 18-24 mg regular nic that i used to use in my Nautilus 1.6 and 1.8 ohm coil tanks (Nauty mini, Triton Mini, Kabuki clone). I vape Power control at 10.5 to 11 W (1.0 ohm kanthal CLR coil), 350-400 deg F, 10.5 to 11W on Temp control with a CLR build with 316L SS). MTL tootle puffing :D
