My first Ego One Mega V2 and my 1.0 CLR's came today. Can't wait to try them out. I have some new juice I've been saving for this.
What wattage do you recommend for the stock 1.0 coils?

very cool, how sweet is that...

- - -

you been around long enuff, you KNOW the rule :D

#1) start low, increase till YOU'RE happy

start around 8-8.5w, go from there... :):)

then after you run that 'stock' wick in that 1.0Ω (for a little bit)
pull out that stale , dry stock cotton and put your own cotton or better yet, Rayon in
you'll be surprised the diff...

I've never used rayon. I've always been a KGD cotton user.

:) it's all good, main thing is, TO ME, just seems the stock 'wick' is knda stale...

I noticed a BIG difference when I swap'd in some of my cotton (then later rayon)

suggest ya get some 'time' on the complete stock coil (so you know)
then try it with some of your own wickin'...

Can't remember if this has been revealed yet, but just in case, there is a way to make these wonderful CLR coils even better, thanks to our good Professor Cheech.

1) The obvious: yank out the overstuffed cotton wick and replace it with rayon.

2) When recoiling, try stainless steel. 304 or 316 or 316L are all good choices.
The flavor is much cleaner than with Ti or kanthal. SS coils work very nicely in both wattage/voltage and temperature control modes.

3) Dr. Cheechako's Magikal Mystery Flavour Enhancer: Place a rayon flavor wick on top of the coil, replace the top cap, and trim the tails. the flavor wick should be a little thing, in the neighborhood of 10-20% the girth of the main wick. Be sure it doesn't extend beyond the sides of the coil, blocking air flow around the coil.

4) enjoy some extraordinary vapor and flavor!

I replace both wicks every three or four days to maintain flavor and a good draw.
The steel coils last approximately forever, give or take a few years. :D

What gauge of SS wire do you use?

Is this right? I use 30g Kanthal in just about everything. For my ego one's I make a 7 wrap coil on a 2.5mm mandrel for about 1.7 - 1.8 Ω's. To get about the same thing in SS, it's about double the number of wraps, this is according to Steam Engine.

So far, I have used three wires, all with good results:

316L, 28awg

302/304 0.020"

302/304 0.015" This is my favorite so far. It is very nearly 26 awg. Easy to work, yet strong enough to withstand multiple re-wicking adventures without deforming.

A not insignificant bonus is that it is, to use an engineering term, dirt cheap.

Malin Co. Aircraft Stainless Steel Lockwire can be found from general aviation supplies shops for under $25 delivered in 1 lb. plastic cans. A can of the 0.020" is over 900' of wire, which should last a lifetime or two or three.

I sometimes anneal and air cool it before coil winding, to take out the springiness, and always anneal it after coiling and compressing the coil.

Not sure what you mean by the question. What's right for each of us is what gives us the vapor and flavor we like. I prefer a lower ohms coil for tc or wattage vaping.
You prefer higher resistance. Both are good if we enjoy them.

I started with the stock 1.0 ohm kanthal CLR coil, and liked it a lot. After many experiments, I now mostly build stainless steel coils of 0.45 to 0.70 ohms, 7 to 9 wraps on a 3/32" ( ~2.4mm ) mandrel, depending on the wire I'm using. I compress the coils and then anneal before installing the insulator and bottom pin. For me, the taste is notably better than kanthal. Other people may have different preferences.

I'm referring to the difference in number of wraps between the Kanthal and SS for the same ohm build.

SS is a very low resistance wire, so you are correct: It will take many more wraps of the same gauge ss wire to reach your resistance target.

I chase flavor, and don't mind lots of tasty vapor, so I am basically indifferent to ohms and wraps. Whatever combination of metallurgy, wire gauge, and wraps gives me the flavor I want is ok.

As I write, I am alternating between a 1.2 ohm Ego One V 2 (2.0 ml) tank with a drilled out bottom pin in wattage mode, 10 w/3.22 v, and a 0.65 ohms EgoOneVT with the large hole Ni/Ti pin at 350°F, 18.5 w in tc mode. Both produce lots of vapor and exceptional flavor.
