The light changes to green and stops charging when the charge is complete.

Like anything else that is "automatic", it should not be trusted to be 100% safe. The battery should not be left unattended while charging and should be removed from the charger when the charge is complete or if excessive heat is detected while charging. It is normal for batteries or chargers to be slightly warm while charging but they should never be hot.
