I guess it's time to start turning off my ego's before bedtime...

I was sitting on the PC reading the forums, ego twist on a stand in front of me at arms reach, with a protank connected to it. Led happened to be facing towards me.

Anyway, I am nearly asleep, reading, and... I see the led blinking??... "time to recharge my batter.. er...no.. wait..I've never seen this thing shut off by itself before? why is it blinking?!!!"

So I picked it up, led had stopped blinking. but I could hear crackling of juice being atomized??! Clicked the switch, led didn't light up, but the crackling stopped. only heard it for a couple seconds. Hit the switch again, no light, no sound.. "is it dead??"

Quickly unscrewed the tank, everything seems normal, tank wasn't warm so I am assuming it only fired once or twice. Screwed tank back on, and it's working "normally", or seems to be..

Any ideas of what might have caused it?

EDIT: aaand it just did it again

started blinking again, same as before. I removed the tank again, found a small leak, a couple drops of juice on the contacts, not much at all tho. Cleaned it up with some isopropyl alcohol.

Sat it on the desk without a tank, and it blinked twice. I had just turned it off before using the alcohol!! and it turned itself back on! I am a bit freaked out tbh.. any advice??

A drop of juice on the contact shouldn't make it fire. If juice has leaked all the way down to the switch, yes, that would cause problems, although I'm not sure it would cause that problem.

I normally keep the switch at the top when I vape, to avoid any possible leaks running down the sides and into the switch. I can honestly say that I have never seen juice running down the outside of the ego, towards the switch, ever. Now if juice can get to the switch from the battery contact, then it's possible. I had a big leak inside the battery 'cup', nearly flooded the entire thing. but that was days ago and I am not even sure which ego it was to be honest. could have been this one.. but it was fine...for days?

now it's really freaking me out, it has blinked a few more times, I keep shutting it off, it keeps turning back on!! I can't feel any heat or anything, but I don't know what to do, maybe trash it before going to bed? how does one go to sleep with an auto firing ego in the house?

If it's a new battery, I'd contact the vendor as it may be defective. It should NEVER fire itself!
the store I got it from only accepts returns for 15 days. and this ego is exactly 21 days old :/

thanks a lot for the reply

Hi Sunnata,

I would recommend returning to the store anyway, if they are local, they may want to ensure customer satisfaction and so will offer to assist anyway regardless of their official return policy. It can't hurt to try. If they say not, I would ask them if they would at least dispose of this properly. You sure don't want it to catch fire or explode in your hands/home/car.

If you didn't get this from a local store, then I would recommend calling them and asking for assistance. Again, advice on how to properly dispose of it, because you don't want to put it in the mail at this point. The last thing you want is something like this catching fire or exploding in the mail ... especially with the global environment like it is today!

If it were me, I would not even try using that battery anymore. In fact, I might go so far as to put it in a ziplock bag, seal it in a wooden box, and put it in the backyard, as far away from my house as possible until I had a chance to find out how to deal with it properly.

Just my :2c: on the topic, as always ... YMMV!

Hi devauto, thanks a lot for the reply!

I purchased it online, so I will try to contact them for advice on disposal but I can only reach them thru email and quite honestly I would rather try to figure this out asap.

Sadly no backyard here, I live in an apartment and I'm trying to find a safe place for it to be in while I sleep a few hours, but I don't think there's one.

At this point I don't think it's worth the risk. There's a place nearby that collects/recycles regular batteries, but it's just a trash can in a mall, that they eventually pick up, not exactly a great option. I'll look for alternatives.

Leaking to the switch would be on the inside, and that does sound like what's going on :(

If you can put it in something fire-proof... I have a couple of retired large ceramic ashtrays that I stack, and use for all my charging. So if something goes wrong, everything is up on about 3 inches of non-combustible material. Something like that would let you sleep soundly!

Agree totally with Davuto, it's out of service.

Many of the home improvement stores here take batteries. Tape up the contact area so it can't "connect" to any load. That way, even if (when) it fires, there won't be any current flow to produce heat.

thank you David!

You gave me an idea. I have this ceramic "lamp" (with kerosene wicks), it has a hollow center for the fuel tank, should be a good place to keep it in while I rest. remove fuel tank and it's thick ceramic all around :toast:

at least it hasn't fired for at least half an hour. (in total it fired less than 10 times, with a few blinks that were very close to each other, and a few others more spaced out). it seems to have stopped tho, hopefully it will be ok until I can dispose it tomorrow.

If it is a genuine JoyeTech Twist and the Vendor is an authorized JT dealer:
"In order to better serve all Joyetech customers and build a perfect service system, Joyetech decides to implement new warranty policy:

All authorized Joyetech retailers, no matter the web shop or off-line store, must provide a two-month warranty to end users. Consumers can enjoy the following service provided by the Joyetech retailers: the first month replace and the second month repair."

great info Vapoor, thank you.

mine wasn't from an authorized dealer so there's not much I can do.

I'm looking for possible replacements, does the itaste vv v3 or the mvp 2.0 suffer the same problem at the battery contacts? (as in, newbie gets some leaking, mod dies a few days later) or are they somehow 'shielded' at the battery contacts and won't suffer with this type of mistake?

You're welcome. I really can't see any Vendor not replacing it seeing as you've onlky owned it for 3 weeks- worth s ahot IMO.

If you've got a roasting pan with a lid you could toss it in there. Make sure the lid is secured.

There shouldn't be an issue. I own the Innokin MVP 2 and am very impressed. They seem to be more focused on quality and at $40 for a complete kit it's quite reasonable. I like the iTaste VV V3 except for the small battery- only 800 mah whereas the MVP 2 has a 2600 mah batt.

I'll second Vapoor, both the MVP and the VV3 are nice devices. The MVP V2 adds VW - it's the latest version of the MVP. Not all like the box shape, but it's a good device. With a lot of battery, 2600 mAh.

The VV3 is also a good choice, although as stated, only 800 mAh rating. Maybe ok for your your needs, but may not last the day.

Any device can have problems with immersion in juice, and all the connections seem to be about the same. The center pin has to come through an insulating grommet, and that is the potential source. But, if your topper is working right, the tiny drop won't be an issue. I always clean my connections any time I take off the topper.

PS - nothing wrong with laying the entire device on its side when not in use. If there is a major leak, most will probably run out the side rather than down inside :)
