Every time I see Ekowool all I can see is Elk wool and wonder why someone would want to vape on wool from an elk?

I'm not a silica/Ekowool user, but there are some folks here who do, and I'm sure they'll pipe in.

Thanks, Eskie! I believe this 100% elk-free[emoji1]

Damn! For less than $15 you can get 500' of rayon. It doesn't take much. It works a lil different than cotton. Cotton swells when wet rayon doesn't. So you'll need to wick a lil tighter with rayon not too tight, but snug. You don't wanna mess up the coil.

Do I also need to torch it to get any bad taste out? I once saw someone on a video do that but I don't know if it's necessary

Depends on what coil it is. Most prebuilt coils for tanks can't be dry fired. That I know of.
If you're using a rebuildable tank, has a deck to build your coils on, then you should be able to fire it on the mod, not necessary, but it can be done to make sure its firing evenly.

The ekowool is a 'ceramic-style' fiber wicking material. As such you can dry-burn it if you'd like. You can also torch it before you use it to ensure the "cleanest" taste if you wish. It is gonna be more expensive than cotton/rayon as it will last MUCH longer than either of those. It is a fairly-slow-wicking material (I used with 1.5Ω coils at 10 watts back in the day) so don't go too crazy with your build.

Also here i are some threads where ekowool has been discussed in the past: https://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/search/5503855/?q=ekowool&o=relevance&c[node]=7

I use Silica rope and Ekowool all the time. Virtually indestructable and will last forever.

Some say that there is a slight taste to it. Maybe so, it will go away after 1/2 a tank or so. It does not wick as well as cotton let alone Rayon so heavy chain vaping DTL hits might not be in the cards.

I just pulled/rebuilt two builds I had with it that are +6mo old and with a little rinsing under the faucet the wick looks like new!

I like to match the ID of my coil to the OD of the rope - easy peazy.

My coils foul after about 30 ml of juice. When that happens I dry-burn as part of the cleaning process and re-wick. Whether the wick is cotton, rayon, Ekowool, or Merino Wool, it gets replaced. I thought with Ekowool being silica a person might dry-burn and not have to re-wick but there was a residual off-taste from the gunk inside the coil that required removing the wick from the coil to clean properly. At that point may just as well go with new wick. Have read people who vape flavorless at an exotic PG/VG ratio claim to be able to vape 100 ml before having to clean/re-wick. For others fussy about flavor it is 3 days whether needed or not. I have settled on rayon as it seems to be best overall fit for my MTL low wattage vaping style and devices. As in the car manufacturer ad disclaimer: Mileage may vary...

What if the ID/OD don't match perfectly? Is that asking for problems?

I enjoyed my ekowool when I was using it to rewick my clearo's and protanks. Slide a pin through the hollow to provide a good base to coil the wire around. I just found with both ekowool and silica that if you torch the wick it becomes crispy and harder to work with so you build the coil with the wick then torch the whole thing. I bought my ekowool through coops so it was from Poland and I didn't need to torch it since it had no breakin taste. I still have miles of assorted sizes of ekowool that got replaced by cotton then rayon.

I wish I had a photo, but here is the easiest way to the install Ekowool braided rope through your coil:

    1. Cut about a 3" length of the Ekowool
    2. Twist a 3" long piece of straight coil wire in the center of your 2" long piece of Ekowool
    3. Insert the twisted wire through your already installed coil
    4. Then pull the Ekowool through the coil by pulling on the twisted wire
    5. Cut the Ekowool to your desired length

What you will then have is [2 ropes] of Ekowool through your coil
    _____________________________

BTW ... If your Ekowool is too thick to be pulled through your coil, you either need thinner Ekowool, or just make your coil a little bigger in diameter (either way).

I always wondered how you got that rope through a coil.
