That's exactly what it's like to me, rebuilding a protank!
I knew you could do it! Congrats! :toast:

Did you use rayon or cotton?
I redid some and went back to the needle, just my preference...

I used rayon. I'm not big on the taste of the cotton. And after I was done, I found the 16 gauge needle. It was hiding :glare:
If you decide to redo the pictures or the video, could you please include how many wraps you use? I tried counting but that didn't work when I was trying to watch and wrap at the same time! Please?????? :) Other than that, the video totally rocks!!

For the love of all that is good and holy people!!!!! PLEASE tell me what a tootle puffer is!!!!

Glad you are a rayon fancier prefer the taste over cotton myself.
I was concentrating on just wrapping in the video and plum lost track...I know there are folks
who can calculate with great certainty what gauge to what wraps to get their ohm level,
in my ignorance, I just played with different numbers of wraps and now playing with 30 gauge.
I really need to take notes on what I do...
I believe I did 8 wraps.

So 28 gauge, 8 wraps on a 16 gauge needle? Gotcha!! I have another to build. I was a bit surprised at how nasty that coil was...the coils and the wicks were completely black and the liner material was light brown so it was time.

Every time I rebuild these things it gets easier, so I may use a coil for a day or two and throw it in the rebuild cup.
I admit, it does gross me out to dissect a coil after a lot of use
Rayon is cheap and so is the wire, been experimenting with the amount of liner material also.
Try to keep the liner to one layer for more wicking to coil.
I am starting to put the layer of material in the cap and then put it over the coil...

Stopped at the Dollar Store today and found a box of Liner Material for a dollar...

There are 15 of these individually wrapped packages inside.
Enough for a lifetime of rebuilding!

Love my GS Air and have been following this thread with great interest! Now, that they can be rebuilt takes my interest to a new level.

Tell me Cheechako, does the Dollar Store stuff work as well? I can get some of that readily, methinks.

I carefully compared the two and think they are exactly the same.
In my infinite ignorance, for got to reline a coil with the new stuff from the dollar store...I will go and
reline a coil and let you know.

Yep, works great! must be the same stuff.
Of course, I've used coffee filters too...I feel like a guinea pig!

The length and gage of wire determine your resistance regardless of the number of wraps or size pin used to wrap with. :)

Kanthal A-1 Wire Specs: (Ohms Per Inch)

•28 AWG- 0.439 Ohms/in, 0.0508 Diameter (in.)

•30 AWG- 0.696 Ohms/in, 0.0100 Diameter (in.)

•32 AWG- 1.091 Ohms/in, 0.0080 Diameter (in.)

•33 AWG- 1.383 Ohms/in, 0.0071 Diameter (in.)

•34 AWG- 1.758 Ohms/in, 0.0063 Diameter (in.)

For a 1.5 ohm coil with 28g...1.5/0.439 = 3.41" So about 3 1/2 " of whatever way you wrap it.

You canuckle heads are going to wind up making me try the rebuild.
My eyes and hands are not up to it, but I think I have read one post too many to not try.

Definitely going to need some sort of magnifier from Radio Shack or somewhere.
Anybody want to suggest a cheap source? Hmm, maybe a Walgreens or CVS?

I actually have a bag of 50 premade 1.8ohm coils with wicks. So maybe when I try, I'll just throw one of those in?
Is the liner replacement really necessary? Isn't most of the wear and tear and performance degradation from the coil and wick, not the liner?

I gotta go find the link to the famous Cheechaco video.

Just use tampons..................de gaze :) Your coils should work if they will fit inside the space

Amazon has a lot of great options for magnifying lights, I use one and it is a God send!
Local hobby stores may have them too.
Your premade wicks should work if as Bikenstein says if they fit.
The liner material has to be in place to prevent flooding, if you can't find it locally, send an IM with
your address and I will get some out to you.
Have you rebuilt other coils?
These are exactly like rebuilding Protank coils.
If I can do it, anyone can!

Or look at my blog, created one at the brilliant suggestion of folks here for the video and info.

Thanks. I understand the liner material has to be there, but, can't I reuse that and just swap the coil/wick?

Absolutely! It can be recycled and used again after washing and drying.
I just looked at mine and went "Yuck!" after a few tanks through it.
The material I've been using also wick much better to the coils.

Well, I tore one down to take a look. They put an extra piece of wick between the coils. I think a dual coil build is feasible but not gonna try one yet. No wonder this one quit on me:)

Thanks to Bikenstein, this is what they look like...

Bikenstein, if you do rebuild a dual coil. I would love to see how you do it!

More like this:
Band-Aid First Aid Gauze Pads Small (2 Inch x 2 Inch) | Walgreens
The stuff I have been using is much cheaper at the dollar store:
SAM_1797.jpg
Actual gauze is a bit porous I think and will flood

Well, well, I went into my first aid section of my hall closet and found the Johnson & Johnson First Aid Gauze Pads (small)

I won't be doing this until next weekend, but when I do, I'll be using 28g for approximately 1.5-1.8ohm

Since you mentioned that the gauze is a bit porous, I will try and pick some of the other fabric up sometime this week.

Aside from being possibly too porous, I can't imagine trying to wrap a small piece of gauze around the coil.
I would think it would come unraveled and a mess while doing so.
