Electric cigarette helps you quit | Herald Sun

Queensland Universities Dr Coral Gartner will advocate for increased access to less harmful tobacco in Australia at a major drugs conference next week. Dr Gartner has today said battery powered cigarettes that allow users to inhale nicotine without smoke or tobacco could help those who refuse to quit smoking altogether.

“We would rather that no-one use tobacco, but research suggests there is less health risk with these products compared to regular cigarettes. They could be used to help those people who aren’t going to give up tobacco use,” she said.

An alternative tobacco called ‘snus’ popular in Sweden will also be raised at the conference by Dr Gartner as a way to help people quit smoking.

from the same newspaper on Sunday:

Nicotine vapor may reduce harm of smoke

SMOKE-free electronic cigarettes that provide vaporised nicotine are one of the radical solutions proposed by an Australian researcher to reduce the harmful effects of smoking.

University of Queensland School of Population Health research fellow Dr Coral Gartner said cigarette smoking accounted for two-thirds of Australia's drug-related burden.

"Authorities should consider increasing access to less harmful tobacco products," she said.

Dr Gartner will deliver several options for cutting tobacco-related harm at the Australian Drugs Conference in Melbourne tomorrow.
