Sandy is coming and we were at the store getting water and what not to prepare and I came across an emergency wind up flashlight made by Energizer for less than ten bucks. It says it uses NIMH batteries and 1 min of winding will power the 3 bright LEDS for 3mins. Immediately my modding gears started turning so when I got home it came apart. 3.6v 80mah batteries tested out to be putting out 3.8v after a short wind. This thing was easy to take apart and get to everything. Soon I will pick up another one, throw a 510 connection and a momentary switch in it and see how it vapes. I will post and keep everyone updated. Novelty mod or practical? Guess we will find out...

Not that it is going to help you for this go-round with the weather, but I would recommend checking out something as such

5V 2 5A Mobile Portable USB Battery Charger Power Supply 18650 Box for Phone MP3 | eBay

Less than $10 shipped (not including batteries) will give you a USB and some sort of pin connector output. Throw in some new Panasonic NCR18650B unprotected batteries (~$40) and you have 13600MAH ready to rock at all times. That would give you some serious vape time out of a passthrough! :2cool:

Hmmm, from what I'm hearing about Sandy, I'd think a (small) wind generator would be better than solar. Cranking sounds more reliable.

I got the 10,000 MAH charger from Smokeless Image, took it on vacation, loved it.

Take care (or go somewhere!)(Or both!)

Actually, there is supposedly a Japanese usb charger that works by cooking in a pot, but expensive. I want one for camping in bad
weather.

And I wonder if there are any small windmill usb chargers?

I turned this thing into a pv today. I did hit a road block though. The button cell batteries wouldn't put out enough amps to fire a coil so I took the battery out of a blu disposable and soldered it to the board with my horn switch and 510 connections. The blu battery was almost fully charged so I'm not sure if the cranking will charge it yet, I should know in an hour or two. This thing is very comfy in the hand and will be a nice pv if the cranking will charge it back up. Very little modifications were necessary to the body just to the circuit board to attach the new battery, 510 connection and switch

I'd imagine the more you crank it, the more of the Blu battery capacity you'll charge. I just think it would take a lot of cranking. It is a good EMERGENCY PV tho! Very nice work! I know you're getting prepared for the storm, but if it's not too much trouble, would you mind to share a pic or two of the innards? I may go-about putting one of these critters together, too.

If you're smart enough to take apart that flashlight, you're smart enough to use one of your car charging adaptors and hook it up to a car battery (12v) or the cig lighter. You might also be lucky enough to find a neighbor that has a generator. Most everyone I know in Florida has a small generator, we've learned self sufficiency is much better than depending on the government and utility companies.

For all those in Sandy's path, be safe and good luck.

It would be real interesting to see it working with a voltmeter attached. Awesome photo's.

I found out yesterday that my pass thru charger when plugged into the USB port in our van - charges when the van is not running. I'm guessing that the plain old little usb charger will also.
just a guess... most vehicles with usb ports will do the same?

Or you can buy a Universal USB for like 10 Bucks and Plug it Into the Cigarette Lighter.

Seems Right seeing that I don't use my Cigarette Lighter in my Car Anymore.
