So many "Cigarette Lighter" plugs in cars these days are now known as "Accessory Ports" and sadly a lot of them only run when the key is in the ACC position. Still better than nothing, but does require a key to be in the ignition.

I suppose if the Lights go Off. it might be hard to find your Keys.

Or if you don't have a Car, I guess you could get one of these External Notebook batteries with USB 5v Output.

Mine is 9,800 mAh and I got it New on e-Bay for $24.95 with Free Shipping.

I've been thinking about something like that ... even just for general on the go ...

As for the car keys ... tried and true Floridian here these days. Every common area of my apt has a flashlight tucked away somewhere. :)

This is still my favorite tho: V2 - Dual Color FlashLight by LED Lenser

Amazing little beast of a flashlight for the size. If I could just stop spending on CoOps, I might consider getting a couple more of them. :)

sadly.. the van doesn't have one... a lighter - or even the port for one

There was a Stretch of Years when Car didn't have Cigarette lighters because Smoking was not in Vogue. Now there back for the Gadget Crazy People we seem to have become.

Funny how things will come Full Circle. LOL

Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Tidal Floods or Volcanoes are not a Consideration where I live. It's Earthquakes. I bought that External Battery to use Camping. But it would come in Handy when the 7.5 Hits.

That and for 25 Bucks, How could I not. I'm kinda Gadget Crazy myself.

Now that I think about it, my next flashlight will be something that uses either 18350 or 18650 batteries. :)

If you're smart enough to take apart that flashlight, you're smart enough to use one of your car charging adaptors and hook it up to a car battery (12v) or the cig lighter. You might also be lucky enough to find a neighbor that has a generator. Most everyone I know in Florida has a small generator, we've learned self sufficiency is much better than depending on the government and utility companies.

For all those in Sandy's path, be safe and good luck.

Yea this was for fun. My netbooks hvae large batteries and I could easily charge off of them or us usb adaptors in my cars. Still thats not charging mod batteries. I'm glad I keep egos laying around just in case. Like I said I saw the wind up flashlight and wanted to make a pv out of it. Its rare for me to buy anything and not take it apart and try to re-purpose it into something.

A little late for Sandy, but I have one of these:

Product Card

It's an emergency radio and flashlight with NiMH batteries that can be charged by crank or solar. It can also charge external USB devices. I got it as a thank you gift for donating to my local public radio station. They give them out pretty much every pledge period so I've got one for the car and one for the house. I live in earthquake country, so it's pretty popular.
