Epipe wiring question or just a wiring question in general

I'm trying to make my own epipe. Wiring designs I have seen has the negative connecting to the battery, and the positive connecting to the metal bowl. A button to make contact on top.

But if you look at a mechanical mod, it just has a negative connecting to the battery, and a button on top. No positive connection from the battery base at the atomizer.

Why the difference? Aren't they doing the same thing? Why does the epipe have the negative connecting to the bowl? I'm assuming it's a ground.

what one needs to consider is the circuit completion. The switch can be in either 2 places, "before" the coil, or "after" the coil.
its all a matter of semantics as to which way the current is applied and flows.
Heres an analogy...
Lets say you have a garden hose attached to the spigot, and a turbine attached to the hose in method #1
you turn on the spigot to make the turbine spin.
In method 2 same hose same turbine but this time you have an additional hose attached to the output of the turbine and a squeeze handle sprayer on the end of that hose.
you turn on the spigot but the turbine doesnt spin since the sprayer nozzle isnt open, but once you turn on the spray nozzle the turbine begins to spin....
and thats the theory behind switch placement in a simple circuit...
