Ethyl maltol is used a sweetener or to make cotton candy flavour when used in high percentages.
In very low quantities, it helps to 'tweak' some flavours just like a tiny drop of menthol does with other flavours.
Got some mangosteen from HC.Nice flavour, pretty subtle. Comes a out a good deal better with just a drop or two of EM added.
Needs some steeping ( or any other method of homogenizing ) though.

There are conflicting ideas on the recipe of EM Crystals.

TFA states....
These can be dissolved in alcohol or Propylene Glycol @ 10%. (use a little heat)
typically in PG.

EM is a poison, so you do need to be careful with your ratios.

One recommended ratio is 1/4 tsp per 10ml's

But other sources say:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...rystals-mixing-ratio-pg-create-sweetener.html
1 gram (0.20 teaspoons) of EM is soluble in 17ml of PG (or a 1/4 teaspoon is soluble in 21.25ml of PG)

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...o-i-mix-ethyl-maltol-crystals-no-alcohol.html
To make a stable clear solution of EM I use 500 mg EM in 10 mL of 50-50 PG/VG base from a syringe.

I am of the belief that a 5% solution is good enough.
So, I would go with either of the second recommendations,, and not the 1/4 tsp per 10ml's
Or the over saturated method, not explained in this post.

You would want to let this sit for 1 week and shake every day.
Do not cheat it. Trust me, this stuff gets very powerful over time.

You would then add 1 or 2 drops per 10ml's of juice, typically 1 drop from a eye dropper or plastic dropper bottle
Using a syringe will depend on the size of the Blunt tip needle you are using.
The larger the size the less drops you would use.

You may not notice it right away, it takes time to steep for the sweetness to come through
Trust me when I say,,,, If you over do it, it will eventually taste like crap.

Good Luck

I've mixed low amounts of EM in a few batches, but I honestly can't tell a difference. ...

When I first started to DIY, everyone said if you Want to make a Mix Sweeter, Add Ethyl Maltol. I couldn't Figure Out what was Going on. Because I would Add, and Add, and Add, and Nothing would happen. Well, I Shouldn't say Nothing. Because if you Add Too Much EM, it would start to taste kinda Meh with a Chemical Aftertaste.

I was about to Give Up on DIY. Then I Stumbled onto Sucralose. And the Sweet Life opened up for Me.

Because with Sucralose, you can Make an e-Liquid as Sweet as you Like. Candy, Rot your Teeth, Sickly Sweet. If you want. And there is NO Steeping Needed.

Maybe I'm EM Intolerant or Something. But I just couldn't get to where I wanted to go on the EM Train.

EM is a poison, so you do need to be careful with your ratios.

Do you have a reference for this ^^^

I found this, the amount noted as problematic is extreme. Most anything is a problem in gross quantities.

Ethyl maltol, a new flavor-enhancing agent, was evaluated for biological safety by acute, subacute, and chronic administration and compared with its homolog, maltol, a naturally occurring food constituent. In single-dose, oral studies ethyl maltol was slightly more toxic to laboratory animals than maltol; however, in subacute, 90-day studies this situation was reversed. In rats, maltol at 1000 mg/kg/day inhibited normal growth and produced kidney damage. Ethyl maltol at the same dose caused no gross effects, but the same type of kidney lesions at a lower incidence was observed microscopically. Maltol caused debilitation and death in dogs at 500 mg/kg/day, with accompanying signs of acute hemolysis and altered hepatorenal function. Ethyl maltol at the same dose produced transitory signs of a mild hemolytic anemia. This chemical was well tolerated for two years by rats and dogs. No adverse toxic, reproductive or embryogenic effects at doses up to and including 200 mg/kg/day were observed. Thus, ethyl maltol appears to have a wide margin of safety and, by repeated administration, is less toxic than its homolog maltol.

Sucralose is highly poisonous. It is metabolized in your liver into formaldehyde and other toxins. Also the taste is very bad IMO. I stay away from sucralose/aspartame with food. I can only imagine it being more harmful when inhaled but have no basis for this assumption, but still not going to use it in eliquids.

According to this Thread. Everything is Poisonous. LOL

How much Formaldehyde if formed for 1ml/day of Sucralose?

True, it is, according to the data sheet it does contain 3ppm of arsenic. However, I still use it, but very little, cause you don't need that much. I stated the poison part because in high dose (unknown to me what that is) it is, just putting it out there so people know.

When I do make mine I use the, 5% recipe.

i had the same luck when i first started , i even heated the em powder in pg and figured out how to dissolve 100% of the crystals even when mixed with alcohol but for the life of me i did not find a good use in my mixes but instead of turning to sucralose i chose stevia and with the success rate i never tried em again

I tried Stevia. It wasn't Bad.

But there was a Slight Aftertaste (that could have been Mental) that I Couldn't put my finger on.
