I have a scubagenv3 with the ss mesh and the kanthal wire wrap. The mesh has to be pre burned at the coil area and cannot be touching down below in the tank area.
My first time i rewired the kanthal it glowed red on one end of the coil and it was shorting to the post.
Was fixed , mine do not glow red from my experience with it and it works very well.

Edit: i also like to add on you tube the maker did a very good video on how to make and wind the coils along with the preburn of the ss.

Heating metal is heating metal...regardless of how its done...so if that is not in the same category then neither is lab controlled experiments. If fiberglass and silica presented an imminent danger to your health then EPA/OSHA would have them classified the same as asbestos.

This has been a long running debate here....so I'm not gonna go there....but my point was you pick your poison...there is no such thing as a completely harmless material.

I respect your opinion but I have watched under a microscope as the air is drawn off the coil on a wet fiberglass or silica wick the micro particles being drawn off.

I'm not questioning your credibility, but would it be possible to have this recorded... than have the same thing done with the SS mesh alternative, under the exact same conditions...
since you've seen this first hand, it shouldn't be too difficult to video record this , to be able to post it up for all to see :)

it would be really helpful to have this posted up in the forums, for others to be able to come to their own conclusions.

I had terrible trouble getting my coil/wick done right....I have Scubagen V3(thanks Dan), My solution was to over kill it...

I was constanly braking coil between the wick and + post(red hot, then snap) finally I preburnt EVERTHING Excessivly. I have had the same coil for a month now. if you are using ceramic wick and wrap coils then torch the crap out of the coil including the part of the trailing ends, but not all...if the very endsget oxidized then no conduction. If using SS wick oxidaze the entire wick and then run multi meter around all over it, if it squeels at you burn some more... then wrap coil, Scababatdan has a very good vid on youtube. once coil is wrapped then burn the crap out of the coil and wick some more, make sure to temper with weater....my coil currently is 2.1 ohm running between 3.7-4.2v depending on the juice... with high VG mix and low votage I fire it before it gets to my mouth and then drag. I was buying double flavor liquids, but iwth the Gen V3 they are sooo strong I almopst gag on them...

That is strange, that the coil wire became so brittle. I use a lighter to anneal the coil wire, heat to red move on up the wire.
It is done to take some of the spring out of the wire to make it easier to wrap onto the wick and wire terminals.
I suppose one could try it without lightly burning it than oxidize it on the wick.
