I finally found my booklet written by Tim Dowley on Biblical living. Don't know if I'll complain again on trying to keep up with dust, clothes laundering, etc. It makes you appreciate things like heat and air-conditioning. The first thing I wanted to post is on being a carpenter back then.
By Tim Dowley: The Carpenter (you of course already knew I would do that one first since Jesus was a carpenter.)
The carpenter had two jobs - building houses and making furniture. Carpenters had to be tough strong men. 1) Building a house - To build a house, the carpenter had to cut down trees. Then he shaped the logs he had to cut to use as beams for the roof. He used tools such as a handsaw and an axe to do this work. The axe head was made of stone or bronze and was lashed to a wooden handle. 2) Making furniture - But the carpenter did many smaller jobs too. He made doors and doorframes, wooden looks, tables, stools and chests for the home. He also made ploughs, yokes, and shovels for the farmers.
Health and Medicine
The Jews had many special rules to make sure they led healthy lives. They were to keep one day in seven as a day of rest. They were not to eat certain unhealthy foods. They were to make sure that their food and their homes were clean. The Jews believed they should pray to God when they were ill. But, sometimes they copied surrounding nations by wearing lucky charms to keep away evil spirits. (Big oops. My opinion.) 1) Medicines - The Jews gradually began to use simple natural drugs. They knew how to clean wounds and bandage them, using natural ointments for cuts. They used a herb called myrrh mixed with wine as a pain-killer. 2) Diseases - We know from stories in the Bible that people suffered from many different illnesses and diseases, such as leprosy, blindness, deafness, epilepsy and as cripples. (Mark 1:32-34) If someone was ill, they would ask, "Was this person a sinner - or his mother or father?" (John 9:2-4). 3) Doctors - In Jesuses' time some doctors were trained by the Greeks to do surgical operations. They took vows promising to put the life of their patient first, and not to give away personal details about their patients. (to me, this sounds like the Hypocratic Oath. )
I'll post more, but fibro is saying to stop.
