eVic VTC temp control basics

    I apologize for my ignorance, but this is my first time attempting to use TC. The manual is is somewhat confusing (at least to me). I'm using VapeThink 26 ga 316 SS. Steam engine puts me in my target resistance range w/o any problems. Do I need to manually input the TCR or use the chip's preset value for 316? Are "temp" and "TCR" actually different modes or are they simply individual pieces of temp control mode? The manual reads like they're separate modes. Probably really dumb questions, but I haven't found a good tutorial on Google or YouTube. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    P.S. Assuming I get it dialed in, is TC really a huge improvement in the vape experience?

    Use the pre set value for now. That is probably all you'll ever need. Its all I need.

    TC can be fiddly so whether it's worth it depends on what you do. I use an rda at all times. TC eliminates dry hits so if I'm driving or it's just an inconvenient time to redrip I can vape on a reletively dry wick. TC is just watts control with a temperature limiit. I use stainless wire so that if my build gets wonky for some reason I can switch to watts mode and carry on, mindful to avoid dry hits. A brother of mine vapes at 10 watts in watts mode on a tank with replacable kanthal coil heads. I see no reason for him to change anything unless he gets real fussy about taste and texture and wants more variables to adjust.

    I have been very happy with TC.
    With power mode, the vape gets hotter than I like before I’m finished with a hit.
    It also protects against dry hits when I forget to open the juice flow control.
    Consistency is what I like about TC.

    Do you need TCR? Only if your wire doesn’t vape reliably with the standard setting.

    I'm not sure that I need TC. I've got a standard build that I've used in mechs for years w/o issue. I was surprised that I even found VW helpful, but it's definitely improved the consistency of my vaping. In reading about those who've gotten TC dialed in to their liking, it sounds like it can work very well. I've got some 316 SS and Ti to play with, so I may give it a go. I figure I can always go back to my standard if it doesn't work for me. Thanks.

    Like much in vaping, using TC or not is entirely a matter of preference. I happen to like it because I take long draws and I don't like overheating at the end. It's a very significant advantage - for me and the way I vape. As you suggest, playing with it is the best way to find out what suits you.

    I'll just start with a quick overview of temperature control:

    Temperature affects the resistance of a metal. Temperature control measures changes in your coil's resistance and uses that to calculate temperature. Of course, different metals change at different rates, so the mod needs to know the TCR (temperature coefficient of resistance) for the metal in your coil.

    TC and TCR can be described as the same mode, but using different settings. If you pick TC SS, it'll use a pre-set TCR value for SS 316. If you pick TCR, you'll have to put in your own value for your wire. With the eVic, you should be fine using TC SS.

    Speaking of TC SS, you'll notice that there are different TC settings - TC Ni, TC Ti and TC SS. They're really just TCR presets for Nickel 200, Titanium and Stainless Steel 316.

    A few things to remember with TC:
    • Always make sure you've got the right setting (TC Ni, TC Ti, TC SS) for your wire.
    • Never use nickel or titanium in VW, only TC. SS 316 can be safely used in both TC and VW.
    • Make sure your coil is at room temperature when you lock in the resistance.

    Thanks for all the input. I have some smaller gauge wire on the way which will definitely help me make my coil w/a bit more resistance. I got my 26 ga 316 SS and made a 10/11 slightly spaced 3.0mm i.d. single coil that measured 0.46 ohms. I locked the room temp resistance in on the eVic and then experimented with the max wattage and temp settings. I started at 50 watts and 410 deg f. MUCH too hot, too fast, and almost instantly into protect. After playing with the max wattage, 25-27 watts seems to give me a quick ramp up w/o getting too hot. I slowly brought the temp down to taste and ended up with it set at 340 deg f. It starts off drawing around 6.5-7 A and then fluctuates in the mid 4 A range. I'm sure my settings will change as I play with it more, but as is, it ramps up to a good warm vape quickly and stays right there. I'm pretty impressed so far. With 36 mg juice, there's definitely a sweet spot so this is really interesting. If I can master this on the eVic, perhaps I can find a way to justify the far more complex Dicodes tube mod I'm drooling over:thumb:. To those experienced with TC, do my values seem inline with a "correct" TC setup? Thanks.
