EVOD heads not lasting

So i've had my Evod for a couple of weeks and i'm a little concerned that i must have gone through about 10 coils by now!

before i bought it most places said coils last for about 1-3 weeks but mine seem to average a couple of days, one of them lasted a week and another couple were bad from new.

What i mean is a disgusting bitter burned taste ... Yuk!

All of them are genuine coils 1.8 ohm on a regular EVOD tank and EVOD 3.7v battery.

juice is Hangsen USA Menthol which is a mild sweet menthol.

did i perhaps get a bad batch? or is it time to realise cheap equipment is no good and invest in something better (nautilus mini etc?)

Any opinions gratefully appreciated!

Hmm.

I ran out of homemade heads over the weekend and needed something (anything) to tide me over. I fitted an "old" evod head to my mini Protank on Tuesday. By this morning it was tasting rough as anything. Took it out, pulled it out, and black, burned, horrible.

So - there we have it. Not even 48 hours. Burnt black to useless in less than 2ml of liquid at 7 watts.

Shocking.

Don't dwell on the "cheap" aspect to this. Kanger heads are just bad. That's why so many of us rebuild them.

3 thoughts;

1) try the new mini nautilus (I'm ordering one tomorrow)..
2) try rebuilding your own (it took me a while to get good at it, mind you) or
3) use a service that will rebuild them for you. There is a chap on AAEC and UKV offering this exact service...

Some companies sell microcoils, but at £5.99 I have no interest whatsoever, especially as people are offering to make them for you for £2 or something.

I am sorry I missed your arrival on ECF, you might have even read my not-so-friendly post on another thread regarding Liberty Flights.

Interesting ... i bought the EVOD based on good reviews.

I did get some wick and tried rebuilding a couple ... out of my expired coil pile i only had 2 that weren't black as coal :(

i rewicked these nonetheless ... one gurgled due to flooding then after about 4 hours tasted burned, the other i am yet to try.

I wouldn't mind just throwing them out if they lasted a week or so each, at about £2 a piece new that's only a days worth of baccy but at this rate its almost more expensive.

Thinking about taking the plunge and getting a mini nautilus also, but not sure if it's a bit overkill for my needs.

Was also considering a Kanger protank but based on my experience of Kanger coils I'm reluctant.

I also got a head from SmokShop ... Think it was Smoktek branded, but was advertised as compatible with EVOD, lasted a couple of days also.

Indeed i saw your post about Liberty Flights, fortunately i have not ordered from them and have no plans to either :)

I guess if you take the rough with the smooth, EVODs are not bad. Most folk probably vape the 2.5ohm clearos with standard eGo batteries, which would normally last longer, I guess.
When I was ordering a 5 pack per week (and using three different coloured evods) they were better than 1-2 days. I kept the power down on my mod to 7 watts or so and seemed to avoid burned out coils.
Some people have more luck taking out one of the extra silica wicks, but I tend use 80% or 70% PG liquid and that's a fail... because it then leaks.

The iClear16 heads last the longest of all "off-the-shelf" clearomisers. I got over a month sometimes on these, but they are not a really top vape i.m.o. The i30 is disastrous and the 30S, whilst good, often has a bad taste and both use juice very, very fast.

The smok ARO (3.5ml) is totally useless.

if you got the time try rebuilding your heads with 28ga wire and ss mesh its a real pain in the rear to get the hotspots and shorts out but ive had them to last a month or more , ive made the mesh wicks like 2 1/2 in long just like a silica wick or as short as 1/2 in i tend to like the longer ones , if you search utube for rebuilding vivi nova heads with ss mesh there are several vids , they make it look easy so dont get mad when you spend 30 min or more like i have just to build 1 head but i promise it will be worth it cause when it gets gunked up just dry burn and rinse under water then dry burn a 2nd time and your ready for juice again in less than 5 min

I was using evod single coil 1.8 ohm and I was getting 2 weeks out of it. I recently upgraded to the protank 3 dual coil 2.0 ohm with the smoktech woo mod. I have had only one coil not last but I figure it was cause I over did it. I did see the kangortech changed the coils to have to wick inside a metal shield with slots in it instead of just a silicon seal with the wick exposed. maybe there is just not enough e-liquid getting to the wick now. But I have not gotten one of the new style coils yet to see the difference. I am very happy tho with my current set up.

Do you clean and dry burn the coils?

(Have a look here http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...al-how-clean-dry-burn-kanger-protank-2-a.html or Google up "dry burn evod" or protank - all the bottom single coils are similar.)

Some flavors just seem to gunk heads a lot faster than others. But with a good clean, dry burn and flavor wick replacment, I've had originals go for months before needing to be rewound. (Or tossed, if you don't care to rewind coils. Although in that case, just clean and save them, as you may decide at some later time to begin rebuilding them. Which is really cheap compared to replacing, and not very hard at all.)

I found the 1.8 don't last too well. I got some 2.2 and they are a lot better, but I rebuild my own now at about 2.2 and they are also good.

£2 a piece, that's a lot! I bought some from this website, the 20-pack is the best value, works out well under £1 each: ShoptoStop.co.uk e cigarettes & e liquids

If you want to give rebuilding another go, this video might be helpful if you haven't seen it already: eVod - YouTube

With kanger coils, its really a hit n miss with the bad quality control. Ive gone through countless packs of coils from kanger, some lasted a week, some a few days, n some were just bad to begin with, it just tasted burnt right away even letting the juice soak in or do many priming puffs. So if ur using kanger coils, expect some to be bad from the factory.

Oh and also, the type of juice u vape will have an affect on the coils longevity as well. 2 carry 2 flavors with me in 2 tanks everyday, and 1 tank's coil will last 1 week n be all black/burnt/gunked up while the other will last me another week with the coil looking slightly burnt only.

I've been using the new and improved heads and getting about 2-3 days out of each one.
Went to try and rebuild it but it is really hard to take apart the new design.
When I researched it they said you needed to place in a vice to get it apart.
Is a shame as I don't have a vice at home.
I too read stories of heads lasting a week+ and thought maybe I was vaping too much for the heads but a tank a day hardly seems excessive.

Weird I just barely cleaned my first one last night.. Been vaping on it for 5 days and just decided to clean it for the heck of it.. Took it apart, still looks great after soaking it in some hot water.. Coil still looks like new, wick is nice and white again.
All the ones that came with my kit were 1.8s too..

In my experience with Kanger products, I used to love my Protanks/Evods, but after receiving numerous boxes of bad replacement heads i made the switch to cartomizers and loved it. Then when I ran out of cartos I went back to my kanger set up and got more bad heads! needless to say i went right back to cartos in a tank. I can actually get some longevity from them, as well as better tasting juices.

i've tried to rebuild a few, most of them had black coils even after cleaning in vodka.

The 3 i successfully rebuilt, one tasted like ..., another flooded and the third i havn't tried yet.

I got some 2.2ohm coils and these have already outlasted the 1.8s

yes they're tricky to rebuild, too much cotton and it wont wick properly leading to burnt taste, too little and itll flood, I still havnt master them yet

on a side note, I notice the old style coils where the wick sticks out lasts A LOT longer than the new style where everything's encased. the old style lasts me 1-2 weeks but the new ones seem to last me arnd 5 days
