eVod vs. Protank replacement heads

Hello again. I've been vaping for about 6 months now. I started out with Blu branded e-cigs and moved on to ego-c twist batteries with evod clearomizers. I'm not into modding or anything. I'm quite content with my egos.

However, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find 'evod' replacement heads. It seems everyone is moving towards selling the evod/protank interchangeable replacement heads. Maybe because kangertech has stopped manufacturing the shorter-stemmed heads. Not sure. But what I'm finding is that I don't like them as much. Not only is the vape a little cooler, but for me, I've found them to burn out waaaay quicker than the old shorter stemmed evod heads. Also, I usually clean and dry burn the heads until it stops working. It seems to me that the shorter ones will dry burn a few times, whereas the longer ones seem to retain a burnt taste after cleaning them.

Now, so I can be completely honest, my vaping has changed a little. I used to vape right at 3.4 volts, but am now finding that I am vaping at either 3.8 or 4 volts. Maybe the increased voltage is making them burn out quicker? I don't know. But I've got a couple of the shorter ones left, and they seem to last 2-3 days, where I've burned up one of the newer, longer stemmed ones in a single day. Also, I have always used standard (2.4-2.5) genuine kangertech atomizer heads. I did buy a 5-pack of 2.2s, but didn't notice much of a difference. I also chain vape. I've got two batteries/tanks, and always seem to have one in my hand. I don't think I take excessively long draws, but do like a good hit.

I vape 100% VG juice (Wisconsin Frost and Vanda [vanilla]) from Johnson Creek. From what I understand VG is thicker and burns up atomizers quicker? Again, I don't know.

What I'd like to know is if the shorter stemmed heads are not manufactured anymore. If not, any recommendations on where to buy them? I might be inclined to buy 20-30 of them.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations on a different tank to use with my ego-c twists? I did try a mini protank 2, but didn't like the additional length or the metal tip, and I dropped it and broke the glass tube the second day I had it as well. Not too fond of it for those reasons. I am perfectly happy with the juice I'm vaping, so I'd like a recommendation on the best tank for 100% VG juices.. especially the extra thick Vanda (vanilla) juice.

Thanks again.

I haven't tried to order any authentic EVOD replacement heads lately, but when I was using them, the only real difference that I noticed with the Protank heads was an ever so slight airy draw, so I was basically happy using either of them.

Glass is really important though, don't be put off by your bad first experience there. Those polycarbonate plastic tanks will start to break down in time, even with juices that are considered "safe".

As far as alternate tanks are concerned, I've been very happy lately with the Aspire BDC. The flavor is consistently the best that I've experienced in my first year of vaping. You can get them at Nhaler.com.

One device that could possibly suit all of your needs is the Davide Aspire Glassomizer. You can use not only Aspire heads with it, but also EVOD's and Protanks just by removing one piece of it. It's a very nice device.

I currently use ProTank 2's. I like the glass tank, because I know that it's not going to deteriorate or harbor bacteria. What I didn't like was my heads were only lasting a day or two, because my ADV is a dark e-liquid. In the effort to save money, I learned how to rebuild the heads with micro-coils and cotton wick. It wasn't that hard, and I found I like the flavor much better,
I currently have about 15 rebuilt heads in rotation that me and my daughter use. After a couple days use, I just pull the cotton wick, soak the heads in vodka overnight, then insert a new cotton wick. Fast and easy.

The only EVOD (short stem) coils you'll find are going to be "clones" now - not Kanger, and so you MAY find a quality issue.
I bought a few here, from FastTech - but never used them enough to determine whether they were as good as Kanger or not.
They're cheap, and free shipping, so maybe do what I did and tack some on to an order for other FastTech stuff?

Did you throw the others away? You can snap them off and put them on the longer style if you kept them. They are interchangeable. I take mine apart to re-wick and dry burn and don't pay attention to which ones the short stems were on when re-assembling. There is a slight difference in the vape between the long & short stem but it doesn't bother me.

I haven't had much luck with dry burning either type. The silica changes somehow after a dry burn and I can taste it in my lighter flavored liquids. I still burn the gunk off the coil but change out the wick to cotton instead of trying to save the original silica one. I bought some silica to play with but so far I really prefer the taste of the cotton ball wicks.

Not sure what you were buying but there are only two Kanger replacement coils now: The type that fits ProTanks and EVODS, and a different version for the T3s & MT3s. The vent tube on the coil is now the same length for all of 'em. These get confused by people and although they can be interchangeably screwed into the different bases they are different and don't fit properly. (The outsider here is the new PT3 with a completely different coil design that fits nothing but the PT3.)

I don't know what you mean by "burning up" the coils. And you didn't say what resistance coils you are using. But running the low resistance 1.8 ohm coils at 3.8 to 4.0 volts would make them go harsh quickly. Even 3.2 volts can be too much some times for new Kanger 1.8 ohm coils. At higher voltages you are cooking residue into the coil and wick and once you do that you are burning crud off the coil and producing vapor at the same time in short order. That never tastes good.

I did list the atomizers I use as generally 2.4-2.5 ohms, and that I had bought a pack of 2.2s as well.
Maybe it's time for me to learn to build (rebuild) my atomizers?

When people talk about rewicking, are they talking about just the flavor wicks, or removing the whole coil and replacing it?

Could someone point me towards a quality site (even if more expensive) to buy what I need to build or rebuild my atomizers? I'm assuming this site would also have silica and/or cotton wicks?

Could you point me to a link that instructs one how to do this, and maybe a site to buy the needed materials?

RipTripper has another video on building micro coils. It's the same concept.
I rebuild with micro coils that are 1.9 ohms. I have had zero issues with coils burning out. When I clean the rebuilt head I pull out the cotton wick, soak the head in vodka overnight, then dry burn to remove any remaining gunk.

1.9 ohms wouldn't be too bad for me. A few questions if you have another minute or two.

Could I ask exactly what I'd need to build my own coils that would fit in my eVod/Protank replacement heads?

What size wire would I need to build ~2.2 ohm coils?

Do you personally prefer cotton over silica?

What do you use to wrap your wire around? A needle?

Is an ohm tester a must have? Could I do without it by using an iTaste 3?

I'm really just tired of buying replacement heads. I do clean and dry burn them, but even then, they only last a few cycles. I'm perfectly comfortable making my own. I'm not afraid at all, and am sure it'll be a cinch. I just want to make sure I have everything I need first.

You and the others are what makes this forum one of the best on the internet. I appreciate all of your help.

My last order for EVOD heads was filled with ProTank ones. I was told that's all Kanger is making anymore. I don't like them because I vape a lot of menthol and the ProTank heads make it taste horrid for some reason I can't figure out. The EVOD heads didn't. I gave all but one of my EVODs away and just kept the one for a fruit flavor I vape that is unaffected by that awful taste. Actually I'm glad this happened because I found the iSmoka (same as Anyvape) as a result and really like it. I never liked the airy draw of the EVOD and the iSmoka doesn't have that plus the iSmoka is lighter to carry.

But... the million dollar question is are the heads for the iSmoka able to be taken apart and cleaned?

These are the only coils I have ever rebuilt. I am not a DIY kind of person, but I haven't found anything I love out of the box. I didn't realize how much silica wicks mute the flavor until I started rebuilding my heads.

There are also numerous threads on the forums with tricks and tips. Just search for PT2 mic rocoil or Protank 2 micro coil.

Take a look at the videos below. I build mine just like Rip Trippers. I used 28G kanthal and organic cotton from CVS. I don't have an Ohm meter. I just use for iTaste VV to measure the resistance on my coils. There is a learning curve. My first couple of coils were complete failures.

This is a great idea (swapping out the stem) - never even thought of that - duh! Personally, I tried rebuilding, didn't like it and now I have a ton of head parts sitting around. I can just swap out the stem on the new PT style heads. I also notice a difference on the draw of the short EVOD heads vs. the PTs. I have tried a lot of clearos and I still find myself preferring my EVODS and classic Protanks (cept when I hit a speedbump in the car and the metal hits my teeth!

I finally got around to building a coil (turned into building three because I completely fouled up the first two). The one I finally got built was based on Rip's microcoil. I used 30G Kanthal instead, but wrapped it 12 times, and ended up with a 2.7 ohm coil?? If I'm not mistaken, 28G is thicker (provides more resistance) than 30G, correct? So if I used 30G, how did I end up with a 2.7 ohm coil, and he ended up with a 1.8 ohm coil? Secondly, I did try another method (putting the needle down the middle of the silica wick (2mm), wrapping, etc. I found that silica is almost impossible for one person to work with. It needs tension to cut through it, and working with such small pieces, all I seemed to do is shred it. Luckily I did have some organic cotton and used it with Rip's method above. Another thing I'll say about his micro coil is that it takes a good 3-4 seconds to heat up the coil and start delivering vape, at least from my iTaste VV/VW v3.
