In 2013 a friend and I bought EVOD vaping devices ("Kanger" I think) to try to switch from decades of smoking. After just a week we both found it too harsh on our throats and stopped using them.

Last week I tried giving it another go. I was thrilled to be able to cut my smoking to a third of what it was, and thought eventually I might be able to quit smoking altogether. However, I've become hoarse and my voice has become gravel-y, effects I never had from smoking. I'm not sure if it's the amount of vapor or the liquid or what. Sometimes there were little bits of blackened schmutz in the mouthpiece......what was that???

At a regular check-up yesterday, my doctor said to quit using the device. He said that given there are no regulations and no accounting for where the liquids come from or what's in them, vaping could be as bad or worse than smoking. He said to find another brand or stop vaping altogether.

I'm still interested in vaping to quit smoking, so I'm wondering: Has anyone else had this experience with the Evod devices? Are there are other brands that are recommendable?

I have a sensitivity to PG. It makes for a sore, scratchy throat kind of feeling. I had to switch to a higher VG fluid. Some of the cheaper juices you can find out there are as much as 90%PG. The atty you are using should be able to handle a 50/50 mixture pretty well, but more than 50 - 60% VG will likely clog it up and burn out the coils. Make sure you are using authentic coils as well. I'm worried that the lil black bits you are talking about may be pieces of wicking material that have burnt and are coming up when you puff on it. I would look into some better juice and find one that lists its VG/PG ratio.

Thank you for your responses! I'm not sure what PG/VG are. I'll have to look into it. I think you're right about the wicking material, that's what it looked like it might be. What juices have been tested for quality? Are there any that give ingredients and where they are made? The juices I was using had no info.....kinda makes you wonder.......

Kanger eVods are legendary. But remember, they are the tools...if you are having harshness or sore throat, its probably the liquid. Hans has a very good post up there. I currently use max VG, and low nic for a smooth draw. Nic content and burnt wick usually cause throat irritation.
As far as your docs advice, its a tough call, since vaping hasn't been long around long enough to get long term results, some more cautious people tend to advise against it. My take...I quit smoking, I feel better, I breathe better, and (as far as I know), hopefully no lung cancer in my future.

My daughter and I are very happy with our Kanger Evods. We've been using them for over a year. We usually use eliquids that are 50 pg/50 vg. We have used eliquids as high as 70 vg/30 pg with no problem, other than having to change the coils a bit more often. My daughter uses 18 mg nicotine and I use 12 mg nicotine.

We have ordered and enjoyed eliquids from Mt. Baker Vapor, VaporBomb, The Vapor Room, Killer Juice, Seattle Vapors, ITC Vapes, Vape Wild, and The Broke Smoker. All have a good selection of flavors, reasonable pricing and shipping costs, good customer service, good turnaround time on orders, and eliquids from all of them are USA made.

I don't know if you got extra coils when you bought your Evod. You will want to keep some on hand. My daughter and I are using 2.2 ohm Kanger single coils, and I usually get them from Mt. Baker Vapor.

You may also want to consider investing in a glass tank such as the Protank 2 Mini or Evod Glass. Some eliquids are known to destroy plastic tanks. With a glass tank, you can vape just about any eliquid.

When my daughter and I started vaping, we used cigalikes and refilled the cartridges ourselves. We mainly used eliquids in the 80 pg/20 vg or 70 pg/30 vg range. When we got our Evods, these pg/vg ratios were incredibly harsh for us. Since we switched to a mainly 50/50 ratio, we have had no problems with harshness.

I hope you find something that works for you soon.

Thanks, thailand. That's the thing! Both my friend and I felt worse than we did when smoking. I do stay hydrated......I drink coffee or iced tea all day long. I was vaping heavily, though, to keep from smoking. I've wondered if there was more vapor "smoke" than necessary. Or maybe the brand of juice had a harsh effect. I would prefer a mid-to-high dose of nicotine to keep from smoking.

More info......the two bottles of juice I have are from Elite Vaporworks. One is a 12 mg. Cinnamon and the other is an 8 mg. Menthol. No origin or ingredient list for either of them. The Cinnamon, I have to say, is scrumptious, very strong flavor, like red hots. I really loved it. Did not love the way I was feeling, though, and now my voice sounds like a frog.

PG is propylene glycol. It helps carry the flavor.

VG is vegetable glycerin. It is thicker than pg, and makes more "clouds" of vapor.

Most eliquids consist of pg, vg, flavorings, and (usually) nicotine. There are quite a few vendors that allow you to adjust the pg and vg ratios to suit your taste. Nicotine is also usually fairly customizable.

Yes, the Evod is a plastic tank, and yes, the Cinnamon Red Hots will likely make it crack.

My daughter melted an Evod tank within a week of us getting them. She loaded the tank with Wild Cherry eliquid just before leaving work to come home. It's only a 20-30 minute drive. By the time she got home, the tank was done for, and Wild Cherry eliquid was all over the place. She had not noticed that the vendor listed it as a "tank cracker".

Pyrex tanks are readily available for reasonable prices. I only use glass tanks. My daughter and her boyfriend go between their Evod plastic tanks and glass tanks, but they are very cautious about which eliquids they use in the plastic tanks.
