So I usually build 28g twisted duel coils. My local vape shop had a spool of 24g 36g Clapton.
I built a .45 ohm 3mm ID 6 wrap duel coils. The vape is fine but it retains too much heat. my PV gets too hot. with so many people using claptons I am wondering if I'm doing something wrong. The build is in a royal hunter and on a vapor shark at 40W. Also the heat is deffinatly not coming from the battery I'm sure it's from the dripper.

I am using a 34/24 Clapton coill size in a single coil LEMO2 and Temple RDA. I built the LEMO coil to .63 ohms and vape at 24 watts on a Sigelei 75, the Temple is dual coils running at .36 ohms and I vape it at 48 watts on a Wismec 200.

If I chain vape, both mods will get warm but neither hit is to hot and the mods do not get to hot to the touch. Take the watts down. I vape .50 ohm builds in the 20 to 30 range fine on my Sigelei 75.

you are right, I may have done more like 7 wraps. I don't really want to go lower ohm that I am right now. Mabe two less wraps or try 2mm ID. or stuck to my twisted 28. I see the popularity of Clapton builds and I don't get it if the heat is this much of an issue.

I'm not snubbing your build at all- it looks great and if that's where you want to be then that's all that matters. I guess my point was that there is a lot of mass being heated and there is bound to be some transfer of that heat into the atomizer cap, deck and mod itself, especially if you are taking many long drags in a short period.

.45 Ohms at 40 Watts is pushing it IMO. .45 Ohms at 25 to 32 or so seems more in in line with a normal burn.

Don't take down the Ohms, take down the watts and see if that cools things off.

There is no "normal" wattage.
Since you are running a regulated device, there is no harm in removing wraps from your coils if you are unsatisfied with their current response time. Smaller coils retain less heat and cool off pretty quickly using a trailing draw.
My typical build is between a fifth and fourth of an ohm, depending on the inner coil diameter I build to. I usually run off a single cell mech, so things can get toasty pretty quickly.
A delrin driptip helps a lot on keeping heat away from your lips.
I know some people make fun of them, but I typically use a keppler 510 heatsink on my tube mods with mini rdas, it really helps keep the atty heat away from the mod + battery.
Authentic copper tarsius 4Nine and royal hunter. The stainless steel prax1s and derringer are both SXK clones.
The keppler 510 heatsinks are both authentic, and can be seen in between the mods and RDAs.

I understand there is no normal and I can run as many watts as I feel safe with since I have a regulated device. The OP stated he was having a problem with the heat. I don't care for a hot hit either; but I do chain vape when driving, having my morning coffee, and sometimes sitting in front of the television.

What I have found is running .50 ohms or higher at 20 to 24 watts makes it easy for me to chain vape without things quickly getting toasty. When I move the watts up to 30 or higher with that same build, things get hot very quickly; to the point of not being enjoyable.
