Atty is an atomizer which is nothing more than a resistor that heats up due to the voltage thats going to it fromn the battery. the wire inside that acts as a resistor touches a steel bridge which has steel mesh and some fiberglass that go to it as a wicking material.. In order for an atty to work you either have to drip liquid straight onto it (dripping) or have a cartridge that holds juice in a filler material which sits ionside the cartridge. When you slide an atty and a cart together the bridge of the atty sits in the filler material of the cartridge. this all together makes a 3 peice PV
A cartomizer (carto), is a atty and cartridge all in one. the peice of wire that acts a resistor and heats up is surrounded by filler material. this makes a 2 peice pv.
I prefer the cartos over the atty/cart set up due to the fact that they hold alot more liquid and produce a cleaner taste. The only time I use an atty is for dripping. I usually use an atty that doesn't work all that great anymore and tear out the wicking material and bridge leaving only the resistor wire exposed. this produce great vapor and throat hit however the atty can never be used for anything other than dripping again.
hope this helps!!!

Simplified explanation:

An atomizer is part of a three piece system. This is the part that heats up the juice and creates the vapor. You use an atomizer with a cartridge, which is the part that's filled with you e-liquid (juice).

A cartomizer is an atomizer and cartridge all in one piece, hence the name cart-o-mizer. You fill the cartomizer with your juice, attach the cartomizer to your battery and vape away.

my only beef with cartomizers is its a bit of a pain to drip liquid in them.

It actually isn't, if you're using the Boge 510, SLB 510, 4081, or KR808D-1 cartomizers. You just remove the white end cap, drip in the number of drops you need to fill it (like 10 to 16 when refilling), while holding the carto at a 45-degree angle, put the white end cap back on, and you're done.

What everybody else said. Plus, I've not had alot of bad luck with eGo Mega carto's. Better luck with prefilled than filling blanks myself. Some reason they end up splitting lengthwise. End up with a slight crack in the body. Guaranteed to leak juice out when I dumb enough to put juice in. Haven't noticed the split until after filling. . .too late then. Besides that, they never line up perpendicular, (flat to button). I'm a stickin to my C-E2 R4's.

Cheers,

I fixed my problem with the eGo Mega cartomizers (bad taste or not much flavor, PITA to fill and refill, only last 1/2 hour compared to one hour using the Boge cartos): I quit using them.

You took the easy way out! j/k

I'm finding that some flavors just don't taste right in a cartomizer. It's the damned filler, so I'm thinking about trying the C-E2 ceramic cartomizers.

For someone who is new, it isn't always clear that you can't drip with a cartomizer. Also the cart (cartridge) vs carto (cartomizer) is a very common confusion topic among new vapers.
Not all Angles fly at the same speed when they first get their wings. :)

What is the difference in an atty and a cartomizer? Is the cartomizer just a larger atty? Doesn't it allow you to drip more juice? Can't I just replace my current atty with a cartomizer?

Atomizer is the heating coil/element that vaporizes the nicotine liquid. Atomizers are meant to be re-used and not immediately disposed.

Cartridge is used in conjunction with an atomizer and holds the juice supply.
Cartridges need an atomizer because they have no built in heating coil.

A cartomizer is a one piece combination cartridge with a built in atomizer coil. So they do not require an additional atomizer to function.

You do not always need a cartridge to use an atomizer. Bypassing the cartridge to vape is called is "dripping." There are several ways that people prefer to "drip." It is a current discussion topic and a little research will give you all the past topics you need. ;) Generally in the place of a cartridge a vaper will use a "drip tip" as an open mouthpiece instead of a cartridge.

Cartridges and Cartomizers are meant to be disposable, however you can rehabilitate them after first use and refill as needed. Refilling some cartos can be a hassle at first. Practice makes it easier. There are several ways to refill a carto as there are to refill a cart. Carts can also be refilled via several different methods, because they are not a combination they can be/seem easier to refill.

The C-E2 cartomizers require a syringe that one would use in arts and crafts, and of pure opinion are easier to refill. Also they don't have some flavors become muted due to filler absorbency like the cartos with filler. You'll have five people state they love "LR" (low resistance) cartomizers and atomizers more than regular. You'll see just as many people have an opinion to the contrary. Some people love them, others hate them.

You are going to have to find your preference. Cartos are great if you need to grab something and run and can't be bothered with anything but attach and go. Carts and dripping are just as good if you are in a position where it is not an inconvenience to do so. :)

Also what is a 306 cartomizer?

510/KR808/801/901/DSE901/905/306/RN4075/4081/401/L88

All model numbers that match the threads of the atomizer and/or cartomizer to the battery/batteries that it can work with. They also identify the battery itself in terms of design and voltage.

Example: A 901 atomizer can work on a KR808 battery and a 901 battery. A KR808 cartomizer won't work on a 901 battery because of restricted airflow in the design differences at the threads. Also KR808 cartomizer and a 901 atomizer will not fit on a 510 battery. Same applies with a 901/808 not working on a 510 charger. Some threads might be the same but the charger won't work because of polarity (+/-) so not all matching threads will mean cross-compatible equipment. Vice versa if the atty and/or carto are 510, they won't fit on the 808/901. (At least not without an adapter.) But some 901 cartridges will fit an RN4075 atomizer. - You get the idea.

When starting out, a newbie trying to decipher the model numbers just end as if they are reading a really bad IQ test question :D:

If cakes are considered to be chocolates, and some chocolates are strawberries, then all cakes are strawberry chocolates.

This statement is:
A.) True
B.) False
C.) Neither A or B

So don't worry about specific model parts until you decide you are likely to buy that model.

I like LR and I am really a fan of the C-E2's for when I have to use cartos. Otherwise carts are okay but I prefer to drip. With that said: I generally recommend to starters to hold off on dripping until you are comfortable, because it is very easy to flood and/or fry an atty if you don't know what you are doing. Exposure and experience more or less teach you what not to do. ;)

Once you try an E2/v4 its almost impossible to go back to filler cartos.

I have been enjoying the heck out of them the last two weeks.
Make sure you clean them and dry burn them first though.

I vodka soak for 15 min, then I use my steam clean method same as my attys.

The E2's are a nice easy draw and with the 3Ω, a nice cool vapor with a TON of flavor.
