Exploding Batteries

So the dumb ... in the video puts a battery in his pocket with other metal objects. The battery shorts and burns him and he's suing the battery manufacturer because he was dumb enough to put the battery in the same pocket with change.
This is unfortunately the world we are living in today

Thank you! I am really trying here but I am just a baby and there is SOOOOOOOOO much information. :)

It's a little overwhelming for sure. It's never a bad thing to have and ask questions here!

Read as much as you can and if you are not sure about something, the friendly folks here will be more than willing to help!

CBS news was all over that story this morning comparing e cigs to hoverboards.

I wonder if the Fine Folks at CBS with Highlight the Percentage Numbers of Battery Explosions in relationship to Total Battery Usage?

ie: Number of Explosions per year divided by Number of Users of a Battery per year.

    Example:

Current Estimates are there about 16 ~ 18 Million Vapers in the USA. So using the Low-End numbers and 19 Incidents of "e-Cigarette" batteries exploding ...

    => 19/16,000,000 = .000001188

    => .0001188%

(Rounding Up because Most People Don't take numbers Seriously after 4 Decimal Places to the right)

So we are Talking about .0002% of the "e-Cigarette" batteries are Exploding.

Damn, that's a Literal Tidal Wave Sweeping the Nation.

I've been at this for almost a year and I learn something new every day. From all of my research, in most cases, it's improper use that causes batteries to explode. I'm definitely not a pro like a lot of people on this site, you're in the right place. I've been asking @Mooch question after question about batteries. He's very informative, he knows batteries. You'll find a lot of people here who know what they're doing and are willing to help.

My co-worker (debbie downer for sure) just shared with me a new story from last night about a mans vape exploding in his pocket. Something about the batteries ... anyone have any info on this?

    Perhaps this will help:

Unfortunately these stories are becoming more and more common., and it just makes vaping as a whole suffer. E-Cigs are not typically the problem, it is mostly the improper use, handling and storage of rechargeable batteries in general. Batteries in laptops, phones, MP3 players, and many other electronics, CAN and DO vent. You don't hear a lot about it because the electronics they are in do not typically stress them to the point of venting and they are sealed off from consumers inside the packs, making it unlikely to have user error and short them.

If you are new to vaping, stick to mods that use internal batteries like iSticks, Coolfires, etc...
If you DO get into mods that use replaceable batteries, you need to read, learn and understand what you are doing, but generally speaking, they are pretty safe when used properly.
ALWAYS put loose batteries in cases when they are not in your mod. Cases are cheap or free when you get batteries.
Charge batteries in a good quality external charger and never leave them unattended or charge when sleeping.

Some things are common sense, some things we take for granted because most people are used to Alkaline batteries which take a fair amount of abuse and generally are not given a lot of caution.

Like other have said, take your time, read, read some more, ask questions, make sure you understand the answers too, if not keep asking until you do. There are a ton of very helpful people on here and we all have a couple of things in common. We enjoy vaping, and we want to help other people enjoy it too, which means not becoming a news story or statistic.

From what I heard it was his mod that exploded. Whatever the case my be, you should never, ever put your mod in your pocket without ensuring it is locked or turned off. As well, batteries should always be in a case as was previously mentioned.
Vaping is getting such a bad rep from people being just plain stupid. It's going to be the downfall of our community if people don't wise up and use common sense as well as a basic understanding of safety with these devices.
Look at the kid in California that the mod exploded in his hand while having a puff. Well, that is going to happen when you put a sub-ohm tank on an EVOD battery.
We, as vapers, should try to educate the ignorant and save our community.

I saw that clip on CBS this morning. They didn't go into specifics, but I presumed he had an unlocked mech in his pocket and it misfired. As others are commenting, it probably was more likely a loose battery that got shorted when he dropped his change in his pocket.

This stuff doesn't have to happen if people would use ONE IOTA of common sense. Only thing I can say is that bad apple(s) spoil the barrel.

If you can't use a little common sense, I don't mind the chlorine in the gene pool.....

So .. is there a place that I can see what batteries goes with what mod best? Here is what I have ... I have both tanks ... one for the fruity juice and one for the creamy juice.

I have gotten the sense that you're trying to take in so much that you're feeling overwhelmed with info-overload. :) It's okay. It will get easier, and better.

Thank you! I really wanted to quit smoking so I ran out and got equipment that I clearly wasn't ready for. Everyone is telling me I should have started smaller but this is what I have now and I really want to feel comfortable with it so I won't go back to smoking. I am 19days without a cigarette right now and that is the longest I have gone in 16yrs!

Vary rarely will I charge my batteries through the mod, only in extreme circumstances where I don't already have a spare battery fully charged (in a battery case of course) ready to go! And then, I will not use the mod in pass thru even if the manufacturer says it's ok to do! I can wait that long till I either get home to another device or battery!!

The batteries you have are good! Keep an eye on their condition charge wise and wrap wise!!

Not sure what this is about but it scared me more!

In the middle of the first paragraph, it references batteries that were made specifically to go in battery PACKS for power tools and such (probably also laptops) that have the proper enclosures and safeguards for those specific batteries. They weren't made to use with e-cigs, but some shops were selling them for that purpose, just because they FIT. So there was some concern on the part of the battery maker, obviously, because they don't want to get sued by people like the guy in the video, which is understandable.

As long as you use batteries that are intended for use in e-cig mods, and you keep them in a proper case when they're not either in your mod or in the charger, you should be OK. I'm no battery expert myself, but I use external battery mods every day, and have never had a problem, because I'm careful with them.

In a week or less you won't feel that way anymore, have a few vapes & chill out some.
You bought good quality batteries & charger from a reputable source, you're asking questions before doing anything you're uncomfortable with.
Seems like you listen to good advice & question so so advice.

I don't see a possible way someone just starting out could do any better than you are.
IMO, you're not over your head, you are doing a fine job.
Relax a little bit & enjoy being smoke free.

Good thing about what you bought, most likely you won't feel the need to upgrade for quite some time if ever.

I think it's more a case of, ecigs were made to fit the batteries, since the batteries already existed. It's not like it was some happy accident.
