Unfortunately these stories are becoming more and more common., and it just makes vaping as a whole suffer. E-Cigs are not typically the problem, it is mostly the improper use, handling and storage of rechargeable batteries in general. Batteries in laptops, phones, MP3 players, and many other electronics, CAN and DO vent. You don't hear a lot about it because the electronics they are in do not typically stress them to the point of venting and they are sealed off from consumers inside the packs, making it unlikely to have user error and short them.
If you are new to vaping, stick to mods that use internal batteries like iSticks, Coolfires, etc...
If you DO get into mods that use replaceable batteries, you need to read, learn and understand what you are doing, but generally speaking, they are pretty safe when used properly.
ALWAYS put loose batteries in cases when they are not in your mod. Cases are cheap or free when you get batteries.
Charge batteries in a good quality external charger and never leave them unattended or charge when sleeping.
Some things are common sense, some things we take for granted because most people are used to Alkaline batteries which take a fair amount of abuse and generally are not given a lot of caution.
Like other have said, take your time, read, read some more, ask questions, make sure you understand the answers too, if not keep asking until you do. There are a ton of very helpful people on here and we all have a couple of things in common. We enjoy vaping, and we want to help other people enjoy it too, which means not becoming a news story or statistic.
