How is it not about sub-ohming? Ok, we don't know what the resistance was, but If the mod had pocket fired with a 1 ohm plus build, wouldn't the the battery have been much less likely to explode?

I think the point was the guy should have been more careful with his mod, or at least locked it... But I agree sub ohm was a factor... But maybe like 10%

Being safe is as much a matter of understanding your equipment and it's limitations as it is about having safe equipment.

Inanimate objects are rarely the issue, it nearly always boils down to operator error.

I do think in all seriousness the attraction to sub-ohming and cloud chasing is a bit of a double edged sword, it both attracts folks to vaping and creates those situations where people are more apt to decide they dislike our community.

My only hope is that this can be viewed as a learning experience, and not treated as a normal incident. With any luck we will learn more about the particulars.

To be fair, it could be a short. That doesn't require sub-ohm at all. We don't know for sure. Or a bad battery.

If I had to bet, I'd bet on a sub-ohm rig though. It stresses some batteries more than others too.

All gets back to knowing what's going on with this stuff AND having safest gear (proper battery and mod with vent holeS). ;)

Respect anything that stores energy. Even carbon zinc batteries (the lowest energy content type in the battery ladder) can explode with devastating effect. Here is a link about Sunbeam C batteries exploding in the face of Escanaba's former mayor:

Two local residents hurt in battery explosion - DailyPress.net | News, Sports, Jobs, Escanaba Information | The Daily Press

uly 2, 2008 "Two local residents hurt in battery explosion"

ESCANABA - Escanaba's former mayor and her husband are urging people not to use Sunbeam batteries after they were injured when one recently exploded in their faces.

Judi and Dave Schwalbach spent more than four hours in the emergency room at OSF St. Francis Hospital June 16 after a C-size Sunbeam battery exploded at their Escanaba home. Particles from the battery became embedded in their eyes when the explosion occurred about 8 that night, said Judi.

"We heard a loud pop," said Judi. The couple and their daughter, Heidi Banks, thought the sound might have come from wireless speakers, which they set up earlier that day.

Dave opened the battery compartment to find black soot inside, Judi said. As she was handing Dave a paper towel, he removed the battery and the battery blew up in his face.

"It was like a fire cracker ... a big one," she said. "A cylinder had flown out... There was black soot on the ceiling, the walls, the floors, in our eyes and up our noses. Dave got it the worst."

Why not have a mandatory tech inspection before the contest? check for proper venting, battery compatibility and ohm check the build. easily done by an impartial tech inspector that is not part of the competition or the judging. after inspection put a tamper proof label of some kind so what was inspected is what was used. That would potentially open the administrators to liability if there is still a malfunction but they are probably liable if someone was to get hurt anyway.

First, it sounds like it wasn't a contestants mod.

Second, even if people did inspect the mod, there's still much debate over what's safe mad what isn't.

Nothing to debate if the sponsor implements reasonable restrictions. Everyone plays by the same rules, If someone doesn't like the rules they don't have to play.

It's not a grenade.

maybe you're just trolling, but...

you should read the reddit and instagram personal accounts of the incident. an eye witness posted on instagram: "The explosion (and I say explosion because that's what is was) caused a fire, blew holes in the 30ft tall ceiling, and created a hole in the concrete."

If you dont think this would cause bodily harm, then well, you're delusional.

Can you link that? I find that extremely hard to believe.

I did and I didn't see holes in the concrete and holes on 30 foot ceilings.

It's just what the Instagram page (link in Reddit thread) says, presumably posted by the uploaded (not too familiar with Instagram).

The explosions created three holes in the ceiling and made a large dent in the concrete floor. [\QUOTE]

I didn't watch the video, so maybe you're disputing the truthfulness of these claims, I have no idea. I just assumed you hadn't read this, and we're asking for the source.

EDIT: bah, tapatalk. Hopefully you can figure out what my quote intentions are :)
