A battery maker specifies charge rates in the product datasheet, there is a reason for this.

Exactly. There is no blanket statement to be applied here as to if/when it's acceptable to ramp up a charge current, just because you want to do it. It all starts with the manufacturer's spec sheets and what they say is the maximum charge current that can be applied to a specific battery.

That's why you use a "smart charger" that monitors internal resistance and preferably cell temperature as well
