Damn....I forgot to pick up a prescription for my cheerios this weekend...what will I eat now??? Do you think my doctor would consider that an emergency so I can call his cell phone? ;)

Dude, I've got some generic "Toasty-O"s from Food4less that just claims to be some cereal with toasted oats in it. Think that'll get you over the hump until you can see your doc? PM me on where to send it....

About that first statement, it's not the American people who have the power to declare something a medical condition or disease. That power rests with the FDA. The FDA, which is financed, supported, and influenced largely by the pharmaceutical industry (feel free to do your own reading on that one) is tasked with declaring as many things as it can to be medical conditions or diseases, because once they do, the ONLY thing that can make ANY claim with respect to it's treatment or alleviation is by definition a drug. And guess who makes and makes money on the drugs?

Yes, I conceed that....it's a tidy little circle....but the medical colleges and study groups have more to do with declaring a certain set of symptoms as a disease. They, too, work hand in hand with Big P, so we have another unholy triad.

But, to their defense, Americans are sooooo demanding....for decades we've gone into our GP, and demanded the "perfect little happy pill" to take care of the most basic aches and pains that the medical groups bent to the whining. We, in our pursuit for instant gratification, have started this downward spiral.

Best solution I know of for heartburn is still a half-teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in water. 30 seconds and one burp later, heartburn's gone. Wonder if Arm & Hammer still mentions that on the box.

My "cure" for heartburn: eat nothing 3 hours before bed.....right before bed, have a small bowl of popcorn. Sleep well....

But don't tell the FDA I'm making health claims...:D

Very true. On the one hand, everyone waves their hands and stomps their feet for personal freedom, but at the same time, the same people want a hand-out, bail-out, or a cure-all for whatever ails them. Can't have freedom without responsibility.

Hilarious. I was looking up "head of the fda" to make a joke about your comment on popcorn, and hits 1 and 4 read like this:

1. "Crawford Confirmed As Head Of FDA" in July of '05 and quotes "The Senate confirmed acting Commissioner Lester M. Crawford as the permanent head of the Food and Drug Administration"

4. "Ex-Head of F.D.A. Faces Criminal Inquiry" referencing Crawford in April of '06 after resigning 3 months into his appointment saying that it was time for someone else to take over.

I guess permanent ain't what it used to be....

Not directly related to the subject, but I got a laugh out of the results of trying to get a laugh....;)

I was actually leaning more towards 1984 although both were good books. :)

Heh, true. It would be nice if those who have the power spent more of their time on common sense rather than dollars and cents. Or that common sense was more common?

You're right, but common sense won't pay their bills, or put their kids through College.

Just an afterthought, has anyone ever seen, noticed, or reported the life styles of the FDA execs? Are they getting the big bonuses, perks, etc.?

He was probably honest and was doing the job right.....can't have that in DC. The good ones don't last in Washington, they either get disgusted and leave, or get corrupted and make it worse...

I would be interested in seeing what the FDA members have hidden in their homesteads....my guess would be lots of "special" presents...
Do they have to have public disclosure as to gifts, salaries, etc, like our elected officials do?

"Based on claims made on your product's label, we have determined that your Cheerios Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal is promoted for conditions that cause it to be a drug"

So the FDA is saying that only drugs can be used to lower cholesterol, in spite of all the science that shows a change in diet is an effective method to lower cholesterol.

I guess if the science isn't produced by big pharma, then its not really science???

The FDA is out of control. They need to be seriously reined in and at least 30% of their employees need to be fired. The organizational culture of this agency is completely corrupted.

I wonder how long until KY Jelly is labeled a new, unapproved, drug? I just saw a commercial on tv for it that promised an increase in pleasure through heightened arousal and increased sensitivity. Sounds like a drug to me (using the FDA's definition, that is).

I wouldnt be surprised if it gets a free pass, though. It's made by Johnson & Johnson
